Sunday School Lesson 127 Joseph is Promoted in Egypt Print E-mail

Lesson: 127 Lesson Name: Joseph is Praised
Theme: Christ the Lord / Sinner's Need and Helplessness

Reading: Genesis 41

Memory Verse: John 6:37
Memory Verse Text: Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.

Point 1: When God's time came, He invaded Pharaoh's mind with a troubling dream and also stirred the butler's thoughts.  God helped Joseph interpret Pharaoh's dream and saw to it that Pharaoh was so impressed that he would choose Joseph, a prisoner, to act as ruler of the land (Gen. 41:38-44).  Joseph was 30 years old at this time after several long years in prison.
Point 2: Note the "bow the knee" of Gen. 41:43 and remind the class of Joseph's dreams (Gen. 37).  Also note the great and long famine over all of the nearby lands; God was setting the stage for the rest of His purposes.
Point 3: Joseph acted wisely in that he took a Gentile bride and organized storehouses of grain in Egypt requiring everyone to come to him for food (Gen. 41:57).
Point 4: Apply Gen. 41:55, "Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do" to the saved and unsaved in the class.  Application: You need to come to the Saviour, and you can, but remember that you must "Bow the knee" to Him as well.

Sunday School Lesson 128 Jacob Sends His Sons to Egypt Print E-mail

Lesson: 128 Lesson Name: Jacob Sends His Sons to Egypt
Theme: Sin Acknowledged: Leads to Salvation

Reading: Genesis 42

Memory Verse: Romans 14:12
Memory Verse Text: Every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Point 1: When news came that there was corn in Egypt, the ten brothers went down.  Jacob wouldn't let Joseph's only full brother, Benjamin, go.  Their mother, Rebekah, had died when Benjamin was born.
Point 2: The brothers bowed themselves before Joseph (Gen. 42:6) without knowing that it was him.  Joseph knew that it was his brothers and spoke harshly and accusingly to them (Gen. 42:7,8).  The brothers then told him their story.  Because Joseph feared God, he didn't treated his brothers the way they had treated him.
Point 3: After demanding that they bring their youngest brother to prove they weren't spies, Joseph heard his brothers confess their sin (Gen. 42:21-23).  What a reminder that each of us will give account of ourselves to God.
Point 4: Joseph had a purpose in bringing his brothers to this dark hour of their lives.  He also knew why God had allowed everything that happened (Gen. 45:5).

Sunday School Lesson 129 Joseph takes his brothers to his house Print E-mail

Lesson: 129 Lesson Name: Joseph Takes His Brothers to His House
Theme: Grace: God's Undeserved Favor

Reading: Genesis 43

Memory Verse: Romans 2:4
Memory Verse Text: The goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.

Point 1: The famine remained hard; God allowed the seven years of severe famine in order to bring reconciliation between Joseph and his family.  How important this reconciliation was to God.  Think of what God has done to bring about reconciliation for us.
Point 2: Benjamin had to go, but Judah had to be willing to bear the blame before Jacob let him go.  God must have been working because this was a very different attitude than Judah used to have.  The brothers were to take a present (act of homage) for "the man on the throne" in order to try and ensure that nothing happened to Benjamin.
Point 3: Joseph was moved when he saw his younger brother and prepared a meal for them all.  The brothers had expected that he would try to seek occasion against them.  At the meal, Joseph had one more test for them, he gave Benjamin five times as much food as any of the other brothers, the portion that rightfully belonged to the eldest.
Point 4: Note: 1) The brothers bowed themselves (Gen. 43:26, 28); 2) Joseph brought God into his dealings with them (Gen. 43:23, 29).

Sunday School Lesson 130 Joseph Reveals Himself to His Brothers Print E-mail

Lesson: 130 Lesson Name: Joseph Reveals Himself to His Brothers
Theme: Christ Revealed

Reading: Genesis 44; Genesis 45:1-8

Memory Verse: Acts 7:13
Memory Verse Text: Joseph was made known unto his brethren.

Point 1: Joseph's brothers were unsettled when they found the money in their sacks the first time, and now, they were accused of stealing Joseph's silver cup.  He had specified that the cup should be hidden in Benjamin's sack.
Point 2: Before the knew what the search would produce, they promised that if the silver cup was found, the man in whose sack it was found would die, and that, the others brothers would become Joseph's slaves (Gen. 44:9).  Note that when the cup was found, the brothers went to Joseph and fell before him (Gen. 44:14) and they brought their guilt before God into the situation (Gen. 44:16).
Point 3: Joseph did all this to see if his brothers had learned from their earlier mistakes.  Judah now not only took the place of a servant before Joseph (Gen. 44:18), but he also volunteered to be a substitute for Benjamin for fear his father would die!  Judah hadn't cared about his father's thoughts before.
Point 4: Joseph couldn't refrain himself or wait any longer.  He sent everyone away in order to be alone with his brothers, who became terrified.  Once alone, Joseph revealed himself, drew them near, and explained their situation in relation to the Divine Will of God (Gen. 45:5,7,8).  God had allowed it all to happen for good!

Notes: The point at which Joseph couldn't refrain himself is a reminder of our Lord's desire to have all distance and doubt removed in order that we might be with Him.

Theme: Restoration / Christ the Sympathizer / God's Provision

Reading: Genesis 45:9-28; 46:1-7, 29-34

Memory Verse: Gen. 45:9-10
Memory Verse Text: Come down unto me, tarry not . . . and thou shalt be near unto me.

Point 1: During the time alone with his brothers: Joseph called for haste in bringing his father Jacob down to Egypt, wept with joy, kissed all of his brothers, and restored communion with them (Gen. 45:13,14,15).
Point 2: Note what the brothers were to tell to Jacob: "God hath made (Joseph) lord of all Egypt," a dwelling place had been prepared, "a near place," and that nourishment was available (Gen. 45:9,10,11).  The brothers were to tell Jacob of all Joseph's glory (Gen. 45:13).
Point 3: Wagons were sent home with the brothers loaded with provisions for the way and presents for Jacob.  All their former possessions were to be counted as nothing (Gen. 45:20).
