Sunday School Lesson 222 Israel Murmers - Manna, Quails, Plague Print E-mail

Lesson: 222 Lesson Name: Israel Murmurs and God Answers
Theme: Sin's Danger and Consequences

Reading: Numbers 11:1-35

Memory Verse: Heb. 12:29
Memory Verse Text: Our God is a consuming fire.

Attention Getter: It happened again! (See Lesson 133A)  The fire of the Lord reached beyond the sons of Aaron to the uttermost of the people!

Point 1: Complaining doesn't seem too bad, does it?  No, it doesn't until you see it from God's point of view.  God had continued to manifest Himself amongst His people and they seemed to completely take His goodness for granted.  As a result, God was about to make them reconsider how great His goodness was!
Point 2: The Israelites could never have journeyed through the desert without God having had provided for them.  Pride and selfishness were/are extremely dangerous.  The mixed multitude (a group who accompanied the children of Israel from Egypt) lusted after the (nearly imaginary) flesh pots of Egypt.  While slaves in Egypt, they probably ate very little of what they now hungered for.
Point 3: Manna, the sustaining and healthy food that God faithfully provided morning by morning, was the focus of the Israelites' complaining.  As a result, God was angry.  Application: We should be careful of arousing God's righteous displeasure.
Point 4: God sent wind that brought the Israelites quail and greedily, they took far more than they could ever eat.  Even though God gave them what they had desired, He also sent a great plague along with it, resulting in the death of many.  Had the Israelites' complaining and the fulfillment of their desire been worth it after all?

Notes: Manna is a picture of Christ.

Summary: Sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death (James 1:15).  Be careful in case you get what you want, and more besides!

Sunday School Lesson 223 Hobab makes a choice Print E-mail

Lesson: 223 Lesson Name: Hobab Makes a Choice
Theme: Opportunity: A Turning Point / Choices

Reading: Numbers 10:28-36

Memory Verse: Hebrews 3:15
Memory Verse Text: Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

Point 1: God had been revealing His goodness, greatness, purposes, and power amongst His people, and as a result, Hobab (Moses' father-in-law) had seen and heard a lot about it.
Point 2: Moses told Hobab all about God's purpose behind the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.  He also described to him the Promised Land and what Hobab would enjoy if he came along with God's Chosen People.  Hobab's opportunity for great blessing was not a dream; God had spoken it.
Point 3: Hobab refused and excused himself on the grounds of his kindred.  Moses pleaded again and explained how Hobab could be useful, but he was still unmoved.  Hobab said, "I will not go" (Num. 10:30).  Sad to say, there are others like him today.
Point 4: Notice: God went before His people and cloud and fire accompanied them; of all people, none were more unique than those the Lord had chosen.  (And Hobab stilll did not want to accompany them.)

Notes: It might be helpful to compare Hobab to Ruth: Ruth was asked to leave, but she made her choice for God and His people saying, "I will go" (Ruth 1:16).

Sunday School Lesson 224 Joshua and Caleb and the mission of the 12 spies Print E-mail

Lesson: 224 Lesson Name: Two Faithful Spies and A Million Fools
Theme: Sin's Foolishness and Carelessness

Reading: Numbers 13, 14

Memory Verse: Psalm 106:24
Memory Verse Text: They despised the pleasant land, they believed not His Word

Point 1: As they neared the Promised Land of Canaan, the Lord told Moses to send spies to go and check it out.  Twelve great men are chosen, however, great men are not always wise.
Point 2: The spies go up to see the land.  Two of the spies, Caleb and Joshua, see the land for its tremendous possibilities knowing that God will be with them; they bring back a true report of the land as well as a sample of its bounty.
Point 3: Caleb and Joshua were not fools. Even though they saw the enemies and great cities of Canaan, amidst it all they saw GOD and His Faithful Word.  The ten other spies discouraged the people with their report because they saw the GIANTS rather than a God who was far greater than them all.
Point 4: God was provoked with the Israelites that wanted to return to Egypt.  As a result, He told them that they would never enter the Promised Land due to their unbelief.  After hearing this, some tried to enter the land anyways and were met with death.  The remainder of the people of that generation wandered in the wilderness until they all had died.

Notes: The majority of the people saw the abundance of the land, but they never got to enjoy it.  God's promise to Caleb and Joshua, that they would be able to enter the land because they had been faithful, came true as God said it would, but even they had their hopes delayed for many frustrating years.

Sunday School Lesson 225 Korah, Dathan Abiram Rebellion Print E-mail

Lesson: 225 Lesson Name: The Rebellion
Theme: Sin's Danger and Consequences

Reading: Numbers 16:1-40

Memory Verse: Hebrews 10:31
Memory Verse Text: It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living  God

Point 1: Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and others, all men of importance, influence, and power, rose up in opposition to the men (Moses and Aaron) whom God had given place and authority to.  Even though these men had been given Levite responsibility by the Lord, they wanted more place than they had been given.
Point 2: The scriptures are clear that their actions and words were "against the Lord" (Num. 16:11).  As a result, Korah and his company were told that there would be a reckoning "before the Lord... tomorrow" (Num. 16:16).
Point 3: The Glory of the Lord was manifested in the events that followed.  God called upon Moses and Aaron to get away from everyone else as He was ready to bring destruction upon them all.  As a result, they "fell upon their faces" and plead with God for mercy, who in turn, told them to instruct Israel to flee from the wicked men.  (Notice that a response was necessary in order to avoid perishing.)  After the declaration was made that God was about to act, the earth opened up and the wicked men promptly went down into the pit causing the Israelites to flee further in fear due to their cries.  Finally, the Lord sent fire to destroy the remaining 250 men that had offered incense.
Point 4: Some of the sons of Korah must have realized their danger in time to escape because there are precious things in the Psalms from them.

Notes: This story gives us an example of railing; speaking against those who have been given authority over us and have been established by God.  Examples include even those given authority in the Government or the Assembly.  Perhaps it would be wise if there were a number of older Christians in the class to make this distinction and press for respect.

Sunday School Lesson 226 The Serpent of Brass / Bronze Print E-mail

Lesson: 226 Lesson Name: Serpent of Brass
Theme: Salvation: Provision For All

Reading: Numbers 21:4-9

Memory Verse: John 3:14
Memory Verse Text: Even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.

Point 1: The Israelites still had not learned their lesson in spite of all that God had done for them because once again, complaining filled their mouths.  Why is it that God must show us the awfulness of our sin time after time?
Point 2: Particularly note their complaint again about the manna and how they said, "our soul," indicating that they were "feelings" oriented, like we are so often today (Num. 21:5).
Point 3: God's response was clear; He sent fiery serpents that would bring death after only one bite.  As a result, the people cried out to Moses.  Their words, "we have spoken," reveal that they understood how that they had sinned (Num. 21:7).  Perhaps it would be helpful to show the class that the thoughts and intents of the heart were the real cause of God's wrath and that their words were only the outcome of what was within.
Point 4: The people asked Moses to "pray unto the Lord" to take the serpents away (Num. 21:7).  This request reveals the Israelites' shortsightedness and limited faith since taking the serpents away would not prevent those already bitten from dying.  God planned to do something so much better than just take the serpents away.  What a wonderful God we have!
