Sunday School Lesson Activity 301 Rahab and the two spies

Lesson Content Suggestions

Point 1: Spies were sent to Jericho.  Even though Rahab would have been called disloyal for receiving the spies into her home, she did due to what she had heard (Joshua 2:9-11).  Rahab knew that it was better to be on the Lord's side no matter what other people thought of her.
Point 2: Rahab's eyes were open to the fact that God was mightily with His people and to the potential danger of acting against God's people.  Rahab recognized that her city and people were in danger and she did not wait for the judgment to fall.
Point 3: Rahab pled her case, starting with what she knew of God!  She wanted to be spared!  Which one of us wouldn't want the same? Rahab wanted a sure token; something she was sure God would give her.
Point 4: She was given God's people's word of promise and told to bind the scarlet cord in the window.  The scarlet cord is a picture of the sinner's only hope, the precious shed blood of the Lord Jesus.

Sunday School Lesson 302 Israel Crosses the Jordan River with the Ark on dry ground Print E-mail

Lesson: 302 Lesson Name: Passage Over Jordan
Theme: Christ the Lifegiver and Resurrection

Reading: Joshua 3:1-17; 4:1-24

Memory Verse: I Cor. 15:4
Memory Verse Text: He was buried and He rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

Point 1: Likely this lesson should be used for the more advanced classes.
The passage over Jordan is a picture of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Point 2: Some references should be used to show that the Ark is a true picture of Christ; this will require some digging, but it is possible that older students could do some research to supplement what the teacher has to say.
Point 3: God gave Heaven-sent instructions for the passage before it ever took place.  Likewise, God said that the Lord would rise again before it ever took place.  The people were also instructed to maintain a holy distance.  This was/is a reminder of the uniqueness and distinctness of the glory of our Lord.
Point 4: The Ark stayed in the midst of the river until all the people had passed over.  God intended that everyone would know the great significance of it all (Joshua 4:21-24).  In addition, the stones left in the river and placed upon the banks were a lasting testimony of what had happened.

Notes: This lesson presents a good opportunity to show interested believers the advantages and usefulness of having a concordance, a Bible dictionary, and a commentary.

Sunday School Lesson 303 Joshua and Israel Destroy Jericho Print E-mail

Lesson: 303 Lesson Name: Destruction of Jericho
Theme: Grace: God's Undeserved Favor

Reading: Joshua 5:13-15; 6:1-27

Memory Verse: Heb. 11:31
Memory Verse Text: By faith Rahab perished not with them.

Point 1: God revealed Himself to Joshua in order to fill his mind with the greatness and holiness of the One who was the True Leader of His people.
Point 2: Even though the proposed strategy was strange to a human's way of thinking, it was the Lord who directed the battle.  In fact, the Lord had declared the victory before the battle even started.  Application: When God is with us, there is no doubt about the outcome, the outcome is victory!
Point 3: Notice: 1) The order of the people, 2) Their silence, and 3) Their unity.  The Jericho walls literally fell into the earth when the people shouted in order that they could go straight forward into the city.  The treasures of Jericho were to be for God and the rest was to be utterly destroyed.  Application: God's value of earthly things is far different than ours.
Point 4: Every detail of the spies' promise to Rahab was kept.  In addition, she was brought into the godly line as seen in Joseph's geneology; "Rachab" is mentioned in Matthew 1:5.

Sunday School Lesson 304 Achan Steals from Jericho and is stoned to death Print E-mail

Lesson: 304 Lesson Name: The Death of Achan
Theme: Sin Found Out / Detected

Reading: Joshua 7:1-26

Memory Verse: Numb. 32:23
Memory Verse Text: Be sure your sin will find you out.

Point 1: The death of the 36 men and the chasing away of the rest came about in a very unusual and awful way.  Afterwards, Joshua went before the Lord and stayed there until the Lord revealed the problem.  Joshua was not in God's thoughts and the Lord had made him feel it.
Point 2: Sin calls for action; accordingly, the people were warned of the next day's reckoning.  Why did Achan wait when he knew that tomorrow was coming?  He thought that he could escape being detected.
Point 3: When the morning came, there was no delay.  God came very close.  Why did Achan still delay?  Oh the foolishness of the sinner who does not know God!  Achan admitted his guilt after finally being exposed.  At that point, the garment which he stole did not look as attractive as it had and the gold could not buy him a right relationship with His God.
Point 4: After Achan's sin was exposed, all Israel was able to see what God had seen all along.  Together they stoned Achan, with all his possessions, in the valley of Achor and raised a pile of stones over him so that everyone would remember that sin will find you out!  Achor means trouble; likewise, sin is big trouble in the midst of God's people.

Notes: It would be wise for those of us who are saved to follow Joshua's example in Point 1:  We should go before God on our knees to have Him show us the reason for our failures and how to deal with them.

Sunday School Lesson 305 The Trick of the Gibeionites Print E-mail

Lesson: 305 Lesson Name: The Trick of the Gibeonites
Theme: Sin's Attractiveness / Distractions

Reading: Joshua 8:1-35; 9:1-27

Memory Verse: Prov. 3:5
Memory Verse Text: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Point 1: The Gibeonites were afraid of the Israelites because of what they had heard, so they made a plan to save their own lives.  In successfully carrying out their plans, Israel agreed to be an ally to the Gibeonites and not hurt them.  It is possible that the Gibeonites had heard that Rahab received a sure word from the Israelites and they knew that an agreement with Israel themselves would be kept.  Application: Appearances can be deceiving!
Point 2: Israel had the Living and Omniscient God with them... how could they ever be fooled?  Joshua had built an altar, wrote out the law, and read it to the people (Joshua 8:30,32,34),  however, he acted independently to make his decision regarding the Gibeonites and did not ask God what they should do.  (He did this before one time at Ai.)  Even though Joshua had his suspensions, he trusted his own opinions and judgment.
Point 3: When the Israelites arrived at Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim on the third day, they were made to look like fools and realized that the Gibeonites had acted wisely.  Israel was bound by its word to spare the Gibeonites, but in turn, they became slaves to Israel for the rest of their lives.
Point 4: Israel was hindered from pursuing its own goals in Joshua 10 because they had to defend their allies, the Gibeonites, from the Amorites.
