file icon Uel Ussher - Missionary Report on Venezuela 06/20/2006 Hits: 173
The first assembly gospel worker commended to Venezuela was a Canadian Mr. William Williams in 1912.  Mr. Gordon Johnston also came in 1912.  The first assembly was formed in 1916 in Puerto Cabello.  There are over 150 assemblies in Venezuela today.  Many of these are gospel-minded to spread the word into places where there are no assemblies yet.  Souls are being saved.  Venezuela has 25 commended gospel workers, 14 of which are nationals.  There are also 4 second-generation missionaries.  Uel and Rae Ussher first arrived in Venezuela in 1968.

Background of Assembly Work

In response to the persistent invitation of an elder in the assembly in Sunnyslope (Northern-Central Phoenix), many believers participated in a Seed Sowers Distribution in December 2000.  Shad Kember and John Dennison held a 9-week series of gospel meetings in a factory owned by Paul and Jean Vizzinni of the Sunny Slope assembly.  Several people were saved.  Meetings continued several nights each week with new attendees and further blessing.  John and Michelle Dennison and their children moved to Phoenix in July 2001.  The first baptism was held in August.  In September, John purchased a building.  After remodeling the first gospel meeting in the building was held on October 3.  Two more Seed Sowers events and associated gospel meetings were held in 2001 and 2002.  Several more people were saved.  On September 15, 2002, 17 believers broke bread for the first time together.

The work has extended to Chihuahua, Mexico through a young couple reached through Seed Sowers distribution and gospel meetings of December 2002.  In April, this sister went home to Chihuahua for two months.  During those months, she reported that at least four relatives had been saved.  Gospel meetings and Seed Sowers have followed.

Background of Assembly Work

There are currently 25 assemblies in Columbia.  The work began in the 1950's - isolated in the Pato area in the south.  However, the majority of the assemblies that exist today are the result of work begun in the coffee-growing heartland of Columia in the early 1970's.  Among the missionary workers are David and Aline Thomson who have been serving since 1996.  They have 2 children - Michael (5 years) and Nicole (18 months).

Background of the work.

In 1987 a Mexican widow was saved when she heard the gospel in Vancouver, British Columbia.  She returned to Mexico.  In January 1988 David Alves accompanied an elder from a Vancouver assembly to Puerto Vallarta to visit this widow.  Doug Reid, of Costa Rica, also went to Puerto Vallarta at that time and they preached the gospel in several homes.  Six souls professed faith in Christ during three weeks of meetings.

In June 1988, David and Lois Alves arrived in Puerto Vallart to live permenently, along with and 11 month old baby boy.  An assembly with twelve in fellowship was established in January of 1989.

  1. Six assemblies established in Mexico are:
  2. El Coapinole, Puerto Vallarta, 1989.
  3. Galvantepec, Zamora, 1995
  4. Tepic, 1998
  5. Palmar de Ixtapa, close to Puerto Vallarta, 1998.
  6. Mitalde, Pachuca, 2000
  7. Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico City, 2001

  3. Harrys and Rebekah Rodriguez (1996) - Pachuca
