“Oh God, No!” Those were the first words I spoke as I dropped to the ground. Lying on the grass that hot June Sunday, I knew that God’s hand had touched my life. An unforeseen obstacle on a dusty moto-cross track had left me with a severely broken leg. My plan for a summer full of motorcycle racing was now over.
I had been raised by faithful, Christian parents. From an early age I knew that I needed to be saved. But as a young teenager, I chose to go my own way and ignore the claims of Jesus Christ and His word upon me. So when I had my accident and I was fitted with a plaster cast from toe to hip, I was determined not to let it hinder my life of pleasure. I went on to live the summer of 1974 to the fullest, but without God. Five months later when my cast was to come off, my best friend crashed while practicing for an up-coming race. Riding in the ambulance with him, I was faced with the issue of death, for he was slipping into deep unconsciousness and was not responding. But God was merciful and two days later, he awoke. Later he was restored to full health. The incident passed but it spoke very loudly to me. It made me realize I was not ready for eternity. I was not prepared to meet God. The summer days of 1974 ended and I looked back on all the activity and pleasure I tried to have. The fall came and went quickly and soon winter arrived. New Year’s Eve found us in London for a party, but even that night I was troubled about my soul. The next day we returned to my hometown of Sarnia. But along the way on icy roads we had a close call with death when the car spun out of control. God again was speaking to my heart. Two weeks later in mid-January, the Christians in the Sarnia Gospel Hall started a series of special Gospel Meetings. I went a few nights with my parents, but I was struggling with a choice: the world and its pleasures or Christ. I knew the first choice would eventually find me lost in hell for eternity. Finally, on Wednesday night of the second week at home in my bed, I faced squarely the question of eternity. I fully realized then that I was lost and deserved to be in hell because I was a sinner. At the moment, through the Word of God, the Spirit of God showed me that “Christ died for me.” In that instant, I was saved! I now had “Peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).
