LESSON 11: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE FURNACES OF EARTH?

Review Center: Use game from lesson 9...
“Wrap Ups“: Directions: Cut card stock up into 8 ½ x 3 2/3 “ sizes. On top left side half write “Acts 20:27, one inch under that write; I Cor 2:14, 1”under that write; C…II Tim 2:15... Acts 17:11... T….I Cor 2:13... L to the bottom. On the right side write on top (1“ under each write next one) : total mention, whole counsel, searched, literally, natural man, comparing, context, & study. Staple a 2 foot (’) long piece of heavy string or yarn to the top of the cardstock near where it says Acts 20:27. With a paper punch or scissors make a notch on the right side of the card near each word, for 8 notches. On left side make 7 notches near the verse references on the edge, starting with I Cor 2:14. Wrap the yarn around the card stock matching the reference to the word it represents. Look up each reference to get it right this first time. Turn the card over and mark lines where the yarn is with a pen- this is a self correcting check for the next time you try to match them. Take the yarn off and try to match them up again without checking the back. Check the back when you’re all done. This helps to memorize 2 related items.
Visual Aids: Print the dates and names that are underlined in the lesson plan material on cardstock or chalk board. Read information about this time and the person/religion doing the persecuting or corrupting of the word of God (not keeping his sayings).
Aims: Older students will be able to associate the date with the name as listed in the lesson. All students should be able to recite the underlined part of the verse.
Go over this verse (the first part of it)
2 Corinthians 2:17 “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God:… “. This verse shows that corruptions to the word of God started at least by 60 AD -when it was written by Paul. People just don’t want to accept what is written sometimes because it offends them or their friends, so they just change it to make others/themselves happy. God truly hates this. He has condemned it in his word.
Here are some verses that show how God really feels about it.
Jeremiah 26:2 “… all the words that I command thee to speak unto them, diminish not a word.”
Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
Psalms 119:160 “Thy word is true from the beginning; and everyone of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”
Ecclesiastes 3:14 “I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it; and God doth it, that men should fear before him.”
Matthew 5:18 “For verily I say unto you, Til heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
Revelation 22:18,19: “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book. If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
Here are some important dates when “The Furnace of Earth” showed its ugly head.
607 BC King Jehoikim cut and burned the Scriptures.
200 AD Origin wrote a 6 version Bible called the Hexapla. He said, “Scriptures are of little use to those who understand them as they are written”. He did not want to take them literally.
303 AD Diocletian, Emperor of Rome; decreed that all sacred (Bible) manuscripts be destroyed and their owners killed. The state church was loosing money because of all the Christians. (Ecc. 10:19)
331 AD Eusebius, a student of Origin, wrote a Greek Bible because Constantine the Roman Emperor commissioned him to make a Bible that would unite his kingdom, accommodating all the religions in it. He used doctrines from the Apocrapha (ones not accepted by the Jews) which say that, for instance money can buy one’s way to heaven . (I Peter 1:18)
400’s AD Augustine of Hippo, Africa said people should be imprisoned or killed because of their beliefs :“It is indeed better that men should be brought to serve God by instruction than by fear of punishment, or by pain. But because the former means are better, the latter must not therefore be neglected. Many must often be brought back to their Lord, like wicked servants, by the rod of temporal suffering.” This is against Jesus’ words “I came not destroy men’s lives but to save them.” Jesus did not believe in killing or causing physical suffering because of someone’s beliefs.
420 AD Jerome wrote the Catholic Latin Vulgate Bible because Pope Damascus asked him to write one that favored the popes doctrines- like paying money to get to heaven, doing penance to get to heaven etc.(Adding to the work of Christ on the cross to pay for our sins.) He used Eusebius’ Greek; one which was taken from Origin’s Hexapla. Hort later said 1400 years later, “… the Septuagint [in Origin‘s Bible], Vaticanus, and Sinaiticus are the … same manuscript Bibles.” This Latin Vulgate was the only legal Bible for the next 1000 years. In these years millions died having other Bibles that were not Catholic- the State church.
1229 AD Edict of Lyons, France (Catholic) said, “Out of the ashes of Waldo many shoots arise and it is necessary to impose a severe and heavy punishment as an example.” So the killing of true Christians continued; those who had a pure Bible originating from Antioch, where they were first called Christians.
1675 AD Spinoza, first “Textual Critic” did not believe in Inspiration saying, “We are not to conceive eternal truth flowing from God.” Started the trend in modern history of writing new Greek Bibles.
1881 AD Westcott and Hort wrote a new Greek Bible from Origin‘s Greek. Some textual critics and “scholars” in the mid 1800’s were clamoring for a new Greek Text assuring themselves that “… they would never again have to submit to divine authority of the Universal text”. [The Received Text, Textus Receptus ;the Antiochian text] F.A.Scrivener on Westcott/Hort committee admitted “Iranaeus (150 AD) and the African fathers [Origin etc] and the whole Western [Rome’s Latin Vulgate] … used far inferior manuscripts to those employed by Stunica or Erasmus [Antiochian text type] or Stephens thirteen centuries later when molding the Textus Receptus. Hort said, “I reject the word infallibility [no mistakes]- of Holy Scriptures overwhelmingly….”.
In 1979 Harold Lindsell wrote, “I will contend that embracing the doctrine of an errant [mistakes in] Scripture will lead to disaster down the road. It will … undermine their belief in a full-orbed truth of the Bible, it will … finally lead to apostasy.”
Materials for Art: Black pen, tape, scissors, glue, Light colored construction paper 9 x 12. Picture of little boy praying. Make one for each student.
Directions for Art Project: Cut lengthwise the colored construction paper in 3 equal sections (2 2/3 “) wide. Tape them together lengthwise making it 36” long. Fold them each in 1/3rds accordion fold, back and forth so you have 9 sections. Glue the picture of little boy to the front/outside section. Write on the first inside page on the back side of the boy, 607 BC King Jehoikim; next page, 200 AD, Origin; etc for all of the times and names that are underlined.
