LESSON 2 DEFINITIONS AND QUOTES THAT EVOLUTION IS A FAITH: A RELIGION Verse Center Romans 3:3:For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid (vs.4) Review Center: Play the game from lesson 1 Visual Aids; Make posters (larger font for class) containing quotes from William Rhind, J. C. Darwin, R Mueller, Dunphy, E. Haeckel, L. More, G Wald, A. Keith, H. Lipson, R. Lewontin and I Tim 6:20 and If evolution is not a science why do so many believe it ? quote, Aims: That all the students could say the underlined part of the verse and give 3/7 reasons why people believe Evolution. Visual Aids: Enlarge the following for visual aids to 22 font size min. I Tim 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called. 1860 Charles Darwin: (wrote his book on evolution in 1859) “ I am bewildered, I had no intention to write atheistically. But … there seems to be so much misery in the world. 1866 Earnest Haeckel: “Spontaneous generation [evolution] must be true otherwise it would be necessary to believe in a Creator.” 1925 Dr. L.T. More: “Our faith in the idea of evolution depends upon our reluctance to accept the … doctrine of special creation.” 1957 Prof. of Biology, George Wald: “We cannot accept that [supernatural creation] on philosophical grounds; therefore we choose to believe the impossible that life arose spontaneously by chance.” 1967 Sir Arthur Keith, “Evolution, unproved, unprovable; we believe it because the only alternative is special creation and that is unthinkable.” Prov H.S. Lipson, “In fact, evolution became in a sense a scientific religion; almost all scientists have accepted it and many are prepared to ’bend’ their observations to fit in with it.” 1981 Dr. Michael Walker, “One is forced to conclude that many scientists and technologists pay lip-service to Darwinian Theory only because it supposedly excludes a Creator from yet another area of material phenomena, and not because it has been paradigmatic in establishing the canons of research in the life sciences and the earth sciences.” Dr Michael Walker, (Anthropologist). ’To Have Evolved or to have Not? That is the Question’, Quadrant, Oct 1981 p. 45. 1957 Paul Ehrlich, Prof. of Biology at Stanford (Nature, Apr 1957) “It [Evolution] is thus outside of empirical science … no one can think of ways in which to test it.” 1978 Larry Azar: “If a biologist teaches that between existing fossils there was a non-existing third … is he not really like the man of religious faith who says, ‘I believe, even though there is no evidence?’ “. 1981 Dr. Colin Patterson: said he had… “experienced a shift from evolution as knowledge to evolution as faith.” 1997 Evolutionist, Richard Lewontin, ( New York Review, “Billions and Billions of Demons, Jan 9,1997 p. 31). “We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism [naturalism]. It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated, moreover, that materialism is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door.” (emphasis mine) 1838- William Rhind wrote a book, “The Age of the Earth: Considered Geologically and Historically.” -after Hutton wrote about the millions of years in his book. He said, I’ll…“stick with scripture and wait for time to expose the errors of the geological theories that contradicted its [the Bible’s] plain teaching on Creation and the Flood… to await the issue of approximation of geological knowledge to the sacred history [the Bible] instead of attempting to torture this later [the Bible] with the former [geological knowledge]”. - pp. 121, 122. 1983 John J. Dunphy, A Religion for a New Age: The Humanist Magazine, (Jan/Feb 1983):23,26. “I am convinced that the battle for humankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceive their role as the proselytizers of a new faith: a religion of humanity that recognizes and respects the spark of what theologians call divinity in every human being. These teachers must embody the same selfless dedication as the most rabid fundamentalist preachers, for they will be ministers of another sort, utilizing a classroom instead of a pulpit to convey humanist values in whatever subject they teach, regardless of the educational level- preschool day care or large state university. The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new- the rotting corpse of Christianity, together with its adjacent evils and misery, and the new faith of humanism.” “Education is the most powerful ally of Humanism, and every American public school is a school of Humanism. What can the theistic Sunday Schools, meeting for an hour once a week, and teaching only a fraction of the children, do to stem the tide of a five-day program of humanistic teaching?” Charles Potter, “Humanism: A New Religion” (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1930) p. 3. Potter signed the Humanist Manifesto in 1933. 1983 Robert Mueller United Nations Assistant Secretary (The Movement Newspaper, Sept 1983) “The most fundamental thing we can do today is to believe in evolution.” Definitions: Science: is the study of observable nature. Creation: is the miracle of God creating the heaven and the earth. Evolution: is a directional process which gives rise to an increase in variety and organization in its products. (J. Huxley) “If evolution is not a science why do so many believe it? 1. That’s all they’ve been taught. 2. They hope there is not God, so that they can live like they want to. 3. They want to blame someone else for their misery so they blame God and reject His Word. 4. Their income depends on it. 5. All their friends believe it. 6. They have too much pride to admit they were wrong for so long. 7. They don’t think it’s that important. Scientists who believed in Creation and what they studied. Science: is the study of observable nature. Creation: is the miracle of God creating the heaven and the earth. Evolution: is a directional process which gives rise to an increase in variety and organization in its products. (Julian Huxley) Have students repeat the 5 words underlined 5 times. To put evolution in a child’s terms it is one kind of animal changing into another kind of animal. Like an ants egg hatching into a cockroach. Or a bean seed growing into a corn plant. We have never observed this, what we do observe is extinction. If animals could change into another kind of animal they would not have to go extinct,… but they can’t. This goes against science and the Bible; Gen 1 which animals and plants would reproduce “AFTER THEIR KIND”. Read the quote from the World Book Encyclopedia, “D” p328. “Each gene consists of part of a DNA molecule. The chemical structure of the DNA that makes up the genes determines that a dog will give birth to a dog instead of a fish.” This is what’s observed and this is what the Bible says would happen. But evolutionists don’t want to face either reality or the Bible. They want to live their own life style so they refuse to believe the Bible. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Heb 11:3 What is Evolution? The whole quote from Julian Huxley said, “Evolution is a directional and essentially irreversible process occurring in time, which in its course gives rise to an increase in variety and an increasingly high level of organization in its products”. The problem is that the requirements namely, “increase in variety” and “increasingly high level of organization” also defies scientific principles as well as observations. The Second Law of Thermodynamics does not allow for either of these. The Second Law says that in the closed system of the natural world, if a system or organism, if left to itself, goes downhill or gets less organized and eventually dies. This is called Entropy. Oxygen works on everything to break it down; it degenerates. The universe is winding down and spreading out. It goes from order to disorder; this is what we observe and also what the Bible says. Isaiah 51:6 says, “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.” God lives out side the material world and is not limited by the scientific laws he created for us. Evolution is based on : 1. Nature being a closed system i.e. Nothing exists outside of nature that is supernatural-like God. 2. Uniformitarianism: All things have continued the same since the “beginning”. No catastrophes like the flood that would influence normal processes. 3. Billions and billions of years to allow for the impossible- “kinds” of animals changing into other “kinds”. 4. Faith in future discoveries to prove their theory. 5. Phylogeny: one phylum changing into another; apes to man, fish to amphibians etc. (Linneaus’ categories of living organisms are : Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species There is no interbreeding above the Family category. Genes account for differences between offspring among Family, Genus and Species.) 6.Quantity and quality of life to go up. 7. Man coming from many deaths of ancestral animals, not death from man because of sin.(Rom 5:12) Evolution is a “science falsely so called” like in I Tim 6:20 “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called.” It is not science, not based on observation but is a faith in a life style that does not believe in God or His Word. That’s why we call it a religion, it is the believing faith in the religion of Atheism; where Man is the center of it. Many scientists who believe in Evolution admit this: Read the quotes from Darwin, More, Wald, Keith, Lipson, Walker, Erhlich, Azar, Patterson and Lewontin. Why do so many people including Christians believe in evolution. “If evolution is not a science why do so many believe it? 1. That’s all they’ve been taught. There’s a reason for that: The government schools have been teaching it for a long time. Read Dunphy’s quote above and Charles Potter who said in 1930- “Education is the most powerful ally of Humanism, and every American public school is a school of Humanism. 3. Potter signed the Humanist Manifesto in 1933. 2. They hope there is no God, so that they can live like they want to. Refer to Refkin’s quote in lesson 1. 3. They want to blame someone else for their misery so they blame God and reject His Word. Darwin’s quote. 4. Their income depends on it. (“As a matter of fact creationism should be discriminated against… no advocate of such propaganda should be trusted to teach science classes or administer science programs anywhere or under any circumstances moreover if any are now doing so they should be dismissed.” (John Patterson, Journal of the National Center for Science Education fall 1984) (“…. fail any student in his class no matter what grade level indicates if that professor discovers the student is a creationist, furthermore the student’s department should have the right of retracting grades and possibly even degrees if the student becomes a creationist later.” Kendrick Frazer, Skeptical Enquirer , fall of 1983) 5. All their friends believe it. 6. They have too much pride to admit they were wrong for so long. 7. They don’t think it matters or makes a difference in their life or the life styles in society. Many Christians do not believe that Evolution is science falsely so called because they believe everything the TV says. Christians today need to have the faith that Mr. Rhind had. He was a biologist in the early 1800’s when Hutton’s theory of the millions of years was popular. In 1838 he said, I’ll… “stick with scripture and wait for time to expose the errors of the geological theories that contradicted its [the Bible’s] plain teaching on Creation and the Flood… to await the issue of approximation of geological knowledge to the sacred history [the Bible] instead of attempting to torture this later [the Bible] with the former [geological knowledge]”. Here is a list of Scientists and their contributions. These Scientists believed wholeheartedly in the Biblical account of creation. Read to the students from your visual aid.
