Lesson: 116 Lesson Name: Hagar and Ishmael Delivered by God
Theme: God's Provision - Its Fullness / Sinner's Need and Helplessness
Reading: Genesis 21:1-21
Memory Verse: Revelation 22:17
Memory Verse Text: Whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely.
Point 1: The true son of promise was born just as God had said he would.
Point 2: Ishmael, "born after the flesh," mocked the promised son. As a result, there was conflict between the promised son and the results of the flesh, Ishmael (Galatians 4:28-31). Note: Mocked could mean played with, teased, or taunted.
Point 3: The water in the skin ran out, bringing Hagar and Ishmael to an end of themselves.
Point 4: God heard the voice of the lad. (It might be a good idea to emphasize that God was keenly aware of their need and was quick to respond even though Ishmael was only a lad.) He called to Hagar from heaven and opened her eyes to behold the well of water, provision that had been made long before they knew or saw it. Hagar and Ishmael each had to take of the water and drink it, and forget their pride.
