Sunday School Lesson 923 - Repentence

Verse center: Mark 1:15:

And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. Have students write verse out on a paper to take home.

Review center: With the verse cards for lessons 1-4 have students play game with a game board and number cards. Can use 4- 8 1/2” x 11 pieces of card stock covered with aluminum foil and taped . Tape the 4 sheets on 3 sides together so they fold into one size. Make small snowflakes of blue printing paper from hexagon pattern, (fold the hexagon in 1/6ths and cut holes), and glue in an S shape over the board. Turn the 4 verse cards from lesson 1’s game and write the references on the back side. Place these cards reference side up. Make 6 small cards with the numbers 1-3 on 2 sets. Place number cards face down, shuffled. Students can take a number for their turn and a verse card and try to recite the verse or read the verse for the younger ones, in order to take their turn. First one to the end wins.

Visual Aids: Make a poster with the 5 verses (II Cor 7:10; Mt 4:17; Acts 3:19; 17:30; 20:21) on it and a poster with the definition of Saving Repentance.

Vocabulary: Conversion: repentance from our sin of unbelief and faith; turning to Christ’s provision of Salvation.

Aims: That the older students would be able to quote the part of the definition that is bold print: “Our sin of unbelief was sending our souls to hell and had nailed Jesus to the cross.” and the verse: “…Repent ye and believe the gospel.” Mk 1:15

Definition of Saving Repentance: a voluntary and sincere change of mind and heart, led by the Holy Spirit, leading to a turning from his/her sin of unbelief and rejection of Christ to faith in Christ. As a result of the change of mind there will be a change of action- the fruit of genuine repentance. It is the recognition and admitting that our sin of unbelief was sending our souls to hell and they had nailed Jesus to the cross.

1. Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation2 Corinthians 7:10. The Bible unhesitatingly and emphatically declares that repentance is the first step in the soul’s return to God.

2. Mt 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3. Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out

4. Acts 17:30God…commandeth all men everywhere to repent.

5. Acts 20:21Repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Repentance is more than moral reformation or regret or being sorry that you got caught.
