If you ever have the chance to go to Gettysburg Pa. and view the battle field, there is one particular place you should visit. Let me tell you about it and tell you about what ALMOST happened there.

The United States was locked in a bitter Civil War. The armies of the North under General Meade had been met by the armies of the South under General Lee. It was a hot July day in 1863. The battle had been bloody and bitter. It was now July 3rd and General Lee needed a victory to turn the tide of the war.

The North occupied a position along Cemetery Ridge. Lee planned to pierce it and drive the North from the ridge. His battle plan was drawn up and ready to go.

At about 1 o'clock, the Confederate guns opened up and began shelling the Northern army on the ridge. The bombardment lasted for two hours. Then there was silence. Out of the silence, 12,000 men under the command of Major General George Pickett began their march across the three quarters of a mile which separated them from Cemetery Ridge.

As they neared the Northern line, the Confederate soldiers let out their famous yell and charged. The guns on Cemetery Ridge opened up and men fell in a hale of bullets and cannon fire. The charge continued. Bravely the Southern soldiers rushed forward as others fell at their sides. For a brief minute, a few Southern soldiers made it to the line and broke through the Northern Army. But they were quickly captured or killed. The battle turned against the South . Of the 12,000 men who began the charge, 8,000 lay dead in that short distance between the two armies. Pickett and the rest of his men retreated.

But there on Cemetery Ridge, by a clump of trees, where those few Southern sodliers broke through for a few minutes, is a monument. It is called the High Water Mark of the Confederacy. It means that this is as close as they ever got to winning the Civil War. They ALMOST broke through the Northern army. Had they done so, they might have turned the verdict of the Civil War. But they didn't because ALMOST is never enough.

Agrippa ALMOST believed God. But ALMOST is not enough. Many boys and girls, men and women, are ALMOST convinced that they should be saved. They ALMOST begin thinking seriously about it. They ALMOST decide that they will put it first. But ALMOST is never enough.

Have you thought about being saved but never made it the most important thing in your life. The Lord Jesus said, "seek ye first the kingdom of God." Matt.6:33. You must put it first. Paul said that "Now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation." 2Cor.6:2.

Wouldn't it be tragic if somewhere in your life, there was a High Water Mark which showed what ALMOST happened: that you were ALMOST saved. Why not believe God?
