Themes: "Opportunity - real, Grace, Mercy John Callendar was a captain of the Massachusetts militia at the famous battle of Bunker Hill against the British over 200 years ago. He had a chance to become famous and to lead the Americans to victory. He saw the enemy approach and saw the guns. he saw the flashes of fire and heard the noise of bullets in the air. He saw men wounded and dying all around. That's when it happened. He did what soldiers fear doing the most: he panicked and ran. When George Washington became the commander of the newly formed American Army, one of his first duties was to court martial Captain Callendar. John Callendar was charged with being a coward. He had run from battle. This was the most infamous crime for a soldier and the last one to ever be forgiven. He was no longer allowed to be a captain. He was thrown out of the army and disgraced. But Callendar did not give up. He wanted one more chance. As soon as he was out of the army, he re-enlisted as a private in the Continental army. He wanted another chance to prove that he could be different. It was later on in the war. The battle this time was called the Battle of Long Island. Callendar was no longer a captain. He was only a private. But when the battle began, he did not run. He stayed. He fought. And he showed such courage, he fought with such skill and daring, he performed so well, that General Washington himself reinstated him as Captain. He wanted one more chance. He got his chance and he made good. In Jesus' parable, the fig tree was given one more chance to bear fruit. God has given you one more chance to believe His word and to be saved. Unlike Captain Callendar, you do not have to fight an enemy and to risk your life. You do not have to face death and danger. Another has died for you. "Christ died for the Ungodly." God is not asking you to do anything but to trust in what another has done. Christ has done all that is needed for salvation. You have heard the story often. God has been waiting for you simply to believe it and to give Him credit for telling the truth. "Today if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts". "Hear and your soul shall live".
