Themes: "Resurrection, God's Power

Over 130 years ago, one of England's greatest poets, Alfred Lord Tennyson, wrote one of the saddest poems in the English language. It is called Enoch Arden. It tells the story of a poor man who marries his childhood sweetheart and then goes to sea to make a living for his family. While at sea, his boat is wrecked and he is given up for dead. After many years, his wife marries a wealthy man in the town and settles into a very comfortable life.

Years later, Enoch Arden is found on a deserted island by a passing ship and brought home. When he discovers that his wife has remarried, he decides to keep the secret to himself. He dies of a broken heart. HIs secret is revealed only after his death.

This very sad story was relived by many soldiers who were reported as dead in World War 1 and World War 2. Their widows would remarry and begin life anew. When the "dead" soldiers suddenly were found and returned, they were often labeled as "Enoch Ardens". Men who were supposed to be dead suddenly were found to be alive.

The story of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus is far different. He was not just supposed to be dead. He died. He was buried. Men and women attended the burial. They knew where His tomb was. But He rose from the dead. His death was real. His resurrection. was real. There is a man in heaven right now who was once dead. Because He is alive, He is able to offer salvation to everyone.

When "Enoch Arden" came back, it led to great sadness for him and for others who found out the secret. But when Christ rose from the tomb, everyone who saw Him was glad: the disciples were suddenly overjoyed; the women who saw Him rejoiced. Everywhere, those who came in contact with a risen Christ were filled with joy.

His resurrection meant that sin was conquered. His resurrection meant that death was conquered. His resurrection meant that Satan was conquered. Who could be sad!

"Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures." 1Cor.15:3,4
