FINALLY SET FREE

How would you like to be a slave, a prisoner that had to work hard all day for no money? This was actually the case for many boys and girls during the times the Roman empire ruled the world.

In those days there was a boy named Lucas and his sister Maria. They had been kidnapped and made slaves even though they were children. They worked hard every day collecting grapes from the vine and bringing them to the press where the juice would be made into wine. Life went on for some time like this for Lucas and Maria. They grew strong and became very good at their work.

One day their master took them to a market. They had been there before. But this day, their master made them take baths and change their clothes. Then they realized that they were going to be sold in the market as slaves.

They had watched before as the purchased slaves were taken off by cruel men who whipped them and made them work very hard. As they thought of it, they began to cry. Their only hope was that they would be sold together and that their new master would be kind.

Soon the selling began for the two children and the price kept getting higher and higher. All of a sudden a voice sounded from the back of the crowd. They didn't hear the amount. But whatever it was, it silenced every other bidder. "Sold" was the auctioneer's cry, and the new master of Maria and Lucas stepped forward. They bowed at his feet as newly purchased slaves were supposed to do, only to hear their master say gently, "Stand up".

The next words they heard were almost too good to be true. They could not understand, but the man who had just paid a high price for them, now told them that he had "bought them to set them free". They left the market that day thankful to the one who had paid for them. They were now willing to serve him for ever out of love.

The ending of this story is beautiful. But not all slaves were as privileged as Maria and Lucas. The Bible also tells us about those who are slaves of sin (John 8:34). For these slaves the Lord Jesus has done the same thing. He has paid the highest amount when He died at the cross to pay for you and set you free. The Word of God says that you are held by a strong master, Satan. But Christ has paid the highest price to set us free and take us home to heaven (1Pet. 1:18,19). He invites you today in the Bible by saying, "Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28.
