Ever since the eclipse of the sun last Monday, Amanda's class had been studying the sun and how it works. Amanda remembered her teacher warning them on the day of the eclipse, "Make sure you don't look directly at the sun. It will burn your eyes and make you go blind." That had frightened her, but since then she had learned more about the sun and now she was glad that she had followed teacher's directions. It had been neat to watch through the little pinhole and see the sun being covered a little, bite size piece at a time. Then Amanda hadn't known how much we depend on the sun for life, or she might have been even more frightened.

You see, as Amanda learned after the eclipse, the sun is an average star. That doesn't mean that it is boring, it means that it is exactly middle-aged and middle-weight for a star of its kind. Our sun leads a steady, settled life in the center of our galaxy. It is in perfect balance with everything else around it. The pull of gravity on the sun's surface matches exactly the heat and pressure in its center. This keeps it from exploding. We should be thankful that this is true, since only with such a reliable star is it possible to have the light and warmth that we need to survive.

Do you think that God knew what He was doing when He created the Earth and the heavens? Of course He did. The sun we live under is just one small example of how great God's creation is, and how well organized. If the sun were any smaller, the Earth would be covered in twilight and frost. If the sun were larger, the planet would have been too hot, and eventually would burn up completely. God knew just how large, and hot the sun needed to be for us to survive. And all He did was speak, and it was formed perfectly.

The sun's temperature is about 15 million degrees Celsius. A small pinhead of the hot gasses that make up the sun would kill a man from a thousand miles away. Aren't you glad that God keeps that furnace in the sky exactly where it needs to be?

Amanda learned the facts about the sun in her class at school, but I hope she reads the Bible and finds out about the God who made the heavens and the Earth, who gave His Son for her. I hope that you will listen when your Sunday School teacher, or your family, teach you from the Bible about creation. As we learned from Psalm 19, one way that God speaks to people is through the awesome work of his creation. We are part of that creation, and God expects us to respond to His word. This means that just knowing that "God so loved the world,..." is not enough. You need to believe it for yourself before you will "have everlasting life." The Earth and the sun will not last forever, but your soul will. Trust the Lord, and know that your sins are forgiven and you are on your way to heaven.
