Themes God's Guidance GOD AT WORK "Oh, no, it can't be!" Mr. John Fletcher thought. "I can't remember a thing!" Did you ever take a test that you studied hard for and then all of a sudden, your mind went completely blank? Really scary, isn't it? Mr. Fletcher was a preacher and he stood up to preach that Sunday. He opened his mouth and his mind went absolutely blank. He could not remember where to read, what his topic was or even any good stories to help make his points. "What am I going to do?" he wondered. While he was standing there, he started to think about the three brave Hebrew slaves who were thrown into Nebuchadnezzar's fiery furnace in the book of Daniel. God seemed to want him to speak on that subject instead of the one he had planned on ... whatever that was! Asking God for help, he began to preach the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. The people in the church sat spellbound. Seldom had he spoken with such grace and power. What Mr. Fletcher did not know was that there was a woman in the audience who was risking her life by even coming to that meeting. Her husband was a baker and he told her that he would kill her by putting her into his large oven if she ever went to church again. What would YOU do?! The lady felt she must obey God rather than man. In spite of what he had threatened to do, she came to the church meeting. God wanted the lady to know that He is able to deliver His own children even from a "burning fiery furnace." That is why the Holy Spirit directed Mr. Fletcher to speak on that very subject. When she arrived home, her angry husband was standing in the doorway waving his big bread knife. With a prayer on her lips she walked up to him with the confidence that God was on her side. Suddenly, her husband dropped to his knees and began trembling as he thought of all his sin. The baker began to weep and plead, "Pray for me. Please pray for me! I'm a terribly wicked man!" The Holy Spirit of God continues to work in our world today. He guides true Christians in their life, He gives us the ability to understand the Bible, He gives us power to live obediently to God, and much more. Another special work of the Holy Spirit is to show men their sinfulness as He did the baker. He works in people's consciences to make them realize their guilt and the punishment they deserve. He also tries to make people understand what it means that "Christ also hath once suffered, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). Has the Holy Spirit been working in your life? He is working because, "God will have all men to be saved" (1 Timothy 2:4). God is willing, able, and ready to save you today!
