Themes: "Choices, Priorities W.S. What is an idol? It is anything that takes the place of God. Is it only a statue that people pray to? That is an idol, but there are other kinds of idols. "Anything that takes the place of God" means that a new car or a job or a boyfriend or girlfriend could be an idol. If it is more important to us than God and if we spend most of our time involved with that person or thing, then it becomes an idol. A pretty young lady had an idol--not a statue but something that took much of Jean's time. Jean loved to party and dance! Her Christian mother felt bad when Jean went dancing with her friends rather than come to hear about the Lord Jesus. She prayed everyday that her daughter would be saved and be sure of Heaven. Jean did go to church sometimes to make her mother happy but she didn't get saved. One day, two preachers came to town to have Gospel meetings. All from the town were invited to come and hear the Word of God. They preached the Bible's message that all people are sinners and can't be in Heaven with their sin, but God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son to come to earth to die for them. Many people trusted Christ and were saved. But not Jean. She didn't want to be there although. She had other more important things to do so she came occasionally. The last night of the meetings was Friday and Jean's mom wanted her to come so bad. "Please come just this last night," she pleaded. But Jean had other plans! In fact, she had bought a brand new dress for the special dance that very night. Even her mother's tears did not stop her from doing what she wanted to do. Jean came in late that night after the dance and woke up the next morning with a bad cold. By the first of the week, she was very sick. Finally, her mother called the doctor and he quickly came to examine her. He looked serious as he checked Jean and with a grim face, he called her mother out of the room. "There is nothing I can do for her," he said. "Your daughter has only a short time to live." After Jean found out she was going to die, she said to her mother, "Get me my dress." She watched as her beautiful daughter gripped the dress with both of her hands. With tears in her eyes, she looked at her mother and said, "Oh, Mother, I've traded my soul for a dress!" Shortly after, Jean died. There was something more important to Jean than her soul and she lost her soul as a result. What idol do you have and will it cost you your soul, too? Don't let anything get in your way of God and the salvation that He wants to give you right now. Nothing else is more important than for you to be sure of Heaven.
