Themes: Grace BDJ Two year old David Lopey sat huddled in a corner in the crowded Hospital del Nino. He was a pathetic sight, his face had been horribly marred by leishmaniasis, a disfiguring disease carried by sand flies. Because of the extensive loss of bone and tissue, only a gaping hole remained where once had been his nose, teeth, upper jaw and mouth. His father, a Campa Indian, had left him at a jungle Catholic Mission, and they had brought the forlorn little figure to the hospital where he was cleaned and fed, but otherwise left alone.
Just as no one was able to help David in his condition, the Bible tells us that we are beyond self help or any improvement as sinners. We need help from heaven.
Touched by his wretched condition, a 20 year old volunteer worker, Martine, sought help for David. She brought him to Lima's Clinic San Filipe, where a famous Scottish plastic surgeon, Ian Jackson was spending two weeks doing charity work. He was unable to do anything for David in Peru, but was willing to face the enormous surgical task if Martine could get permission for David to leave the country. Once it was granted, they flew David to Glasgow where he was accepted into the Jackson family. Dr. Jackson performed over 80 operations on David over the following years and slowly David's new face began to take shape.
All the price for David's help came from the doctor himself. David could not pay anything, and the doctor did not want anything from him. Does that remind you of God's salvation?
The boy who had once been hideously deformed and deserted now was healed, accepted and loved. Just as David's face was ravaged by a dreadful disease, so you have been marred and ruined by sin, but God, in HIS GRACE has provided a means of healing. Just as Dr. Jackson had shown so much love and kindness to David, God has sent his only begotten Son to die on Calvary so that your sin could be washed away, and you could be brought into God's family.
Ruth the Moabitess in the Bible story was also favored and blessed. If you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, these blessings can be yours.
