Themes: "Repentance, Opportunity - turning point, Sin's Deception Every body knew his picture. His name was not important. He looked like a real man. His face was plastered on thousands of billboards and probably in millions of magazines throughout the country. He was "The Marlboro Man." Every inch of him looked like a He - Man. The message that was being given was that if you smoked, you would look just like he did. Rugged, strong, handsome, he looked like he would live forever.
He had begun his career as a rodeo rider, stuntman, and actor. He was among a group of men recruited in 1975 to be models for Marlboro magazine and billboard ads. He smoked cigarettes for over 25 years. From 1975 to 1990 his picture was everywhere.
But in 1990, do you now what happened? He was found to have cancer of the lung. Do you have any idea what caused it? Do you think that he continued to smoke?
Let me ask you a question while You're reading this? Do you think its possible to change your mind too late? Could you find out that something is wrong when it is too late to do anything about it?
When the Marlboro Man found out what he had, he changed his mind entirely. He began giving talks to schools, groups, and even the Marlboro stockholders about the dangers of cigarettes. He warned other people about what can happen because of smoking. He changed his mind entirely.
Have you ever thought about your life and your sins? Maybe you intend someday to change your mind about God and His salvation. Right now you probably think that it would be nice to be saved. But you would really rather wait until later. You need to change your mind - in a hurry.
As his disease grew worse, the once strong Marlboro Man grew weaker. The handsome rugged appearance was lost and he looked very sick, like a man who was dying. Gradually, he became more short of breath, needing oxygen to breath. What had been on the inside was now working itself out. The disease which others couldn't see for a long time, gradually became apparent and worked through every part of his body.
In 1992, the 51 year old man who everyone knew as the Marlboro Man, died. Just before he died he said that his habit had "caught up with me". It was too late.
Many people will awaken in eternity realizing that they have waited too long. The Bible reminds us all that "today is the day of Salvation." 2 Cor.6:1,2.
