Themes Coming Judgment "IF ONLY SHE HAD KNOWN" It was beginning to get dark as the two girls came to the end of Princess Road. They were heading for the movies or the "flicks" as they called them in England. Mavis Stampfer and Monica Tollet were looking forward to an evening of fun and excitement. It was 1943 - and World War II was on. Many times enemy bombs had hit Manchester, England, where the teenage girls lived. They hoped that tonight would be different. However, soon a loud wail pierced the night that sent shudders through the girls. "Oh no!" complained Mavis, "It's the air raid siren." The faint rumbling sound of the enemy planes could be heard in the distance. Danger was approaching. As they looked into the sky, Mavis asked, "What do you think we should do?" Monica's mind was made up. "I don't think they'll attack Manchester tonight, Mavis. They will likely try to hit Coventry again as they did last night." "But the bombers sound extremely close," Mavis replied, "I think we should head for the air raid shelter." "No!" Monica countered loudly, "I've been waiting all week for this night and I'm not going to let anything stop my fun. I don't think they are going to hit our town tonight anyways." She kept on hurrying toward the movie house. Mavis watched her friend leave. Should she go too? Maybe she was silly. What if the bombers didn't attack Manchester? "No," she thought, "The siren tells me danger is coming. I'd better hurry and get underground." She turned around and ran to the air raid shelter. She had just gotten through the door and was trying to find a place to sit down when she felt the first bomb fall. The ground shook all around. Suddenly there was a second thud. Pieces of concrete flew everywhere. People began to scream as the roof caved in! Many were pinned beneath the rubble but Mavis was not hurt. She began to feel her way around and tried to help some who were injured. Finally, everything was quiet. Mavis scrambled through the debris and made her way back to Princess Road. However, she was not ready for what she saw. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles were everywhere. Where the movie house had stood, there were only a couple of walls standing. Monica's night of fun had been her last! If only she had known! What a great separation for the two friends. Mavis listened to the warning and lived, while Monica would not listen and perished. Today, a far greater warning is sounding. God's Word tells us that judgment is coming for sin and that the only place of safety is the Lord jesus Christ. He has suffered for sins already on the cross. He is the only savior. Have you come to Him for salvation? Sadly, millions are like Monica who do not believe the judgement will come. They want their pleasure and fun instead of God's salvation. No wonder the Bible says, "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation" (Hebrews 2:3)?
