"IF THAT WAS ME...?

"The lake is so beautiful this morning," Donald thought to himself as he walked the lakeside path. A gentle breeze made neat little ripples across the water. Each ripple washed against the shore with a soft splash as the birds sang overhead in the birch trees. The beauty of the place froze itself in his mind as he thought of his brother's condition. "Duncan is dying. If that were me, what would become of me? If that were me, I would go to hell, because I am not born again."

Questions flashed through Donald's mind: "Why am I not saved? Is there not a savior? Why, then, am I not saved? What is the matter with me? Would not jesus save me? Yes, He would. I'm a fool; I have neglected the most important thing of all..."

Donald had seen Duncan on Saturday and knew he dying. Today, he knew if it was him he was not ready. Donald was so troubled in his soul. Although he was 15, he had never given much thought about God and eternity even though his parents had taught him what the Bible said. He was a good boy, went to church meetings regularly and read the Bible. But, he knew he was not saved.

Donald arrived a little late that Monday morning to teach his class of rowdy young boys at Inchdown in Ross-shire, Scotland. The classroom disruptions did not matter to Donald as his mind kept going to his dying brother Duncan. He kept thinking over the question, "If that were me where would I be?"

He continued to be bothered about his soul for a week. He did not want to see any of his friends. He just wanted to be saved. The next Thursday was a Presbyterian holiday among his parish and there was no school. That afternoon, he went to church.

After the service, Donald had to walk about five miles back to Inchdown. He was alone and deeply troubled. Despite his privilege of coming from a home where the Bible was read every day, he did not know how to be saved.

Trudging along a short cut across a wooded hill, the thought raced into his mind, "Why should I not be saved right here and now?" Bowing on his knees he cried to God for mercy, but no relief came. Rising up he sighed, "I am surely lost; I can do nothing." Suddenly, John 18:8 blazed into his mind: "If ye seek me, let these go their way." Donald's mind immediately went to the cross where he saw the Lord Jesus dying for him. Instantly, he understood the work was done!

"Christ died for my sins." he thought. There, on that wooded hill in 1859, Donald Ross, the great pioneer of the gospel, was saved. God used him and others to bring the gospel to the United States and Canada.

God convicted joseph's brothers of their sin and Donald Ross of his need. God convicts today. Has God convicted you of your need of christ as you Savior?
