In three minutes, he and his partner would die...

"OK, split the blue one and the red one, but don't touch the yellow one," came the command over Gary's shoulder. He could hear his partner tapping away at a small, portable computer whose screen glowed with a computer model of a bomb.

Gary took a deep breath and tried to steady his hand. The blue and red wires were twisted together only millimeters from the yellow wire.

"Don't touch the yellow one," Gary repeated under his breath. "How much time do we have?" He didn't want to know. But, he had to know! He glanced up as his partner raised three fingers.

Three minutes! If they did not disable this bomb in three minutes, he and his partner would die, and so would hundreds of innocent people. There were enough explosives attached to this bomb to blow the entire building apart. Maybe more. Gary gently pulled the blue and red wires apart.

"Good. Now you should be able to get to the green one."

"Yep. I can see green."

"Cut the green," came the order.

"No!" Gary shouted. "The green one goes to the timer. If I cut it, it's all over." There was a flurry of tapping behind him.

"You're right," came his partner's voice. There was more tapping, more orders, more wire-snipping. The clock counted down dangerously close to zero.

"Gary," his partner finally said, "I've lost the trace on both blue and yellow. We need to cut one of them, but I don't know which!"

Gary squinted at the mass of wires. He could not trace either color more than a few inches.

"I can't help you." His breath was coming faster and faster. "Which one - yellow or blue?" His partner did not answer right away.

"Just a minute! I'm on to something." More tapping.

"We don't have a minute! We have exactly eleven seconds! Yellow or blue?"

This time there was no tapping. Just a pause that seemed to last forever.

"Which one?" Gary shouted. "we're going to die!"

"Yellow!"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes! Do you trust me? Cut it! You only have 4 seconds!"

Gary held his breath. He grasped the yellow wire with his pliers and squeezed until he felt a gentle snap.

The truth was, Gary did trust his partner. They had been on the bomb squad together for almost six years. Of the two, Gary had the steady hand, the wits, the eye for detail. His partner had the ability to see the "big picture", to make decisions. What one missed, the other found. Together they had disarmed more than thirty bombs!

When Gary trusted his partner's word, he saved his life and the lives of hundreds of people who were still inside the building.

When you trust the word of the Lord jesus Christ, you can be saved from your sin forever. Jesus said, "He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life" (John 5:24). You can trust His word and be saved. Will you?
