Themes: Judgement's Finality D.V. The newspaper headline read:"Math whizzes make history". The newspaper told of six high schoolers on the US Math Team, each of whom recently won gold metals at the world championships. Now honestly, the subject of math wouldn't normally have perked my interest, except that this thought occurred to me: 'they sure won't have to worry about too many colleges turning them down'! So I read the article to see if my prediction was right. The report highlighted the lives of two team members from the local area. The first was a gifted violinist from a young age. When he was three years old, he knew how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. By 4, he was doing algebra. When he was 5, he mastered differential calculus. At 8,he got an "A" in trigonometry from summer school - at MIT ! He will be attending Duke University in September, on a full academic scholarship. The other team member was astonishing as well. He was programming a computer when he was only 5, and reading mathematics textbooks as a child for fun. In fifth grade he began taking high school level honors-courses in math. He's now finished high school a year early, and is headed to Harvard University in the fall (likely on a scholarship too, though the news story didn't say). How could I have guessed their futures by knowing only that they were world math-champions? Well, did you ever hear the expression "the handwriting is on the wall"? It means that the future outcome of some situation is quite predictable, even though it hasn't happened yet. As you might have guessed, this expression came from the Bible story of King Belshazzar's feast. In this story, the king's future judgement was written on the palace wall, and was as sure to occur as the sun will rise tomorrow. Why? Because God in heaven declared it would be so! There are some other stories I've read which also remind me of the "handwriting on the wall". One story ends with the words: "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire"(Rev 20:15). Another said:" ...and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:36). These are not very pleasant future predictions, but still are none the less true because it is God who declares it will be so! But unlike Belshazzar's case, these don't have to be true of you! we're told that a Holy God requires that all sin be punished, but in kindness He forewarns all who will listen! Out of love to you, God has also provided a place of safety. The Bible declares that the Lord Jesus willingly became your substitute; He stepped into your place and bore the wrath of God against sin! Christ's payment on the cross has now satisfied a Holy God's demands against those sins, and God is able to forgive you if you'll accept Christ's payment, as your own payment. Can you see what the future holds for sinners who try to meet God without the Savior that He's provided? The handwriting is on the wall...so accept personally Christ's payment as enough for you, and rely on the Lord Jesus as your own Savior today!
