Themes Witnesses IT's TRUE! "To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world." Twenty-seven voices sang out accusations against King George III of England. The men agreed. "We therefore...declare that these United colonies are...free and independent States." Fifty six men dipped quills in ink and signed their names. The Men pledged their "lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor" that these facts were true. On July 4, 1776 the United States of America declared her freedom and independence from British control. Did this really happen? Or, is this a tale like an Aesop's fable. We know it really happened because real people were there. They saw what happened in that room. They saw men sign the parchment. They witnessed something that changed them for the rest of their lives. They talked about what they had experienced and were even willing to die for what they had seen and heard. They lived in the freedom and peace of the United States because of what they had seen. No doubt you believe 56 men signed this famous paper. Do you believe a man died, was buried, and then come back to life again? If someone saw this person alive again, would you believe their witness? The Bible says Jesus died on the cross. Joseph and Nicodemus buried Him. Three days later, He came back to life again. This is not a fable or a tale. It happened. How do we know? After Jesus rose from the dead, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene. He also appeared to Peter, John, James, and all the disciples. He appeared to Thomas. He even showed He was alive to a group of about 500 people at the same time. He showed himself to a woman, a man, a family, a group, an assembly, and even to a killer of Christians. They all described the same thing. They all said the Lord Jesus had appeared and they saw Him and spoke with Him. They knew it was Him. They saw the nail prints in His hands and feet and the wound in His side. Jesus was alive again! How sure were they? Would they talk about it? Many of the men who saw Jesus was alive again went and preached about Him all over the world. If they were not sure He had risen, why would they leave their families to tell others about the risen Christ? Many of them died for what they preached. Governments insisted they stop preaching about Jesus. They told them to admit Jesus never really rose from the dead. Some were tortured, others had their heads cut off, others were crucified. All they had to do was say Jesus was still dead. They refused. They knew He was alive. They saw Him. They knew. God had promised this would happen in the Old Testament. Jesus said it would happen too. So, at the right time, "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures: and that HE WAS SEEN..." (1 Corinthians 15:3-5).
