KEEP YOUR COOL

Mr. Shaw and Mr. Moore hurried up the street. It was a cold and dreary morning. They were eager to get on with their mission, which was to hand out gospel papers in the neighborhood. The morning was very successful. They soon ran out of papers.

"Time to go back to the car for some more" said Mr. Shaw. Suddenly, a group of boys jumped out of a side street and began to yell at them. "Go away, preachers," they yelled. "We don't want you around here."

"Keep walking," said Mr. Shaw. "Maybe They'll go away."

Suddenly, Mr. Moore yelled "Watch out! That boy has a rock." The two men jumped as the rock whizzed by their heads. They walked a little faster, hoping the boys would leave them alone.

As the men walked quickly away, the boys began to run after them. Soon, more boys joined them as they ran along behind the preachers. "we're going to hurt you," they yelled. By now, Mr. Moore was becoming worried. He had never been in a situation like this. Mr. Shaw had been in danger before, but even he was starting to worry.

"Let's stop for a moment" suggested Mr. Shaw. "Why don't we stand still and pray that God will deliver us from trouble." They came to a halt and Mr. Moore began praying. He prayed for their safety and care. He prayed for the boys that were threatening them that God would show them that they needed to be saved. "Amen," said Mr. Shaw. They both opened their eyes. The boys were staring at them. Nobody moved.

Suddenly, one of the boys ran toward them. He looked at them, smirked and then spit on them. Soon, all the boys moved closer and spit on them. Mr. Moore and Mr. Shaw were shocked. Why was this happening to them? They had done nothing wrong. They began to get angry. Neither had ever been spit on before. It was disgusting!

Mr. Moore clenched his fists inside his coat pocket. He thought about teaching these boys a good lesson. A few seconds passed. Both men looked at the boys. "Let's go," Mr. Shaw said softly. They walked toward the car. Behind them they heard the taunts and jeers of the boys as they yelled. It was a sad moment for the two men, but they knew that it would have been wrong to fight back.

About 2000 years ago, another man was taunted, mocked, yelled at, spit on, and hit. He did not fight back. He even let wicked men take Him and nail Him to a cross. That man was the Lord Jesus and He suffered and died in silence to save us. He could have fought. He could have judged the men for their sin. However, He held Himself in self-control. Why? As He said, I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. (John 12:47).
