LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING.

Something didn't seem right to these farmers. Here was a man on horseback who spoke with a British accent. He was dressed like a gentleman of wealth but he couldn't answer their questions.

The year was 1780 and the American colonies were at war with Britain in the Revolutionary War. Recently word had leaked out that the American army was close to defeat. Another British victory and the war would be over.

The three farmers continued to question the stranger. He was nervous and that made the farmers suspicious of him and his story.

Finally they ordered the man to get off of his horse. Then they searched him. They found nothing unusual. He didn't even have a gun. Maybe they were wrong after all. Maybe he was telling the truth and was just a traveller.

"Take off your boots!" snapped one of the farmers. Nervously the man removed one of his boots. Inside they found nothing. It was empty. Just then, one of the farmers heard what sounded like the rustle of paper. He noticed a bulge in the man's stocking.

"Take off your stocking!" The man slowly removed his stocking. As he pulled it from his foot, some papers fell to the ground. Quickly the men grabbed them and looked at them.

"This man is a spy!" he cried.

The farmers found papers in both stockings. Immediately they made the man a prisoner. The drawings on the papers were plans for a surprise attack on West Point. The three farmers had stopped a battle which could have changed the course of the war.

The spy captured that day was Major John Andre. With the help of an American traitor, General Benedict Arnold, he had made up a plan to capture the fort at West Point. But because of three farmers, the plan failed and the colonies fight for independence continued.

In today's lesson, David appeared as a shepherd when in fact God had plans for him to be king. In our story, Major John Andre appeared as a traveller when he was really a spy.

How do you appear before God? To your friends and family you may seem like a good person, but before God, unless you are born again, you are a sinner. The Bible tells us that "all things are opened unto the eyes of" God, (Hebrews 4:13). The Psalmist had to learn also, "My sins are not hid from Thee" (Psa.69:5).

God's eye sees things as they really are. You cannot deceive God. "Be not deceived. God is not mocked" (Gal. 6:7).
