The ambulance's red lights continually flashed across the scene as the attendants expertly lifted the elderly woman from the base of the long stone stairway. They worked quickly and soon the shrill siren was opening traffic before them as they rushed her to the hospital. After a complete examination, the doctor pronounced, "She won't live more than a day."

There was a gentle, caring nurse assigned to take care of the dying woman. After administering to her patient's physical needs, she then sought to comfort her. It was not long before the suffering woman, through her sobs and tears, began to relate her sad story.

"I have travelled all the way from California, stopping at every large city between San Francisco and Boston," she began. "My only son left home many years ago, never telling me where he was going or even why he left. I have waited years for him to return, but it has never happened. Finally, I decided to sell all that I owned, and start this journey in search of my boy."

Exhausted and overwhelmed with grief, the woman lay back in the bed, and sobbed brokenly. The nurse just held her hand and tried to comfort her as much as possible. When a little strength returned, the woman continued:

"I have visited every hospital and prison across the country, and still I can not find him. Some day he may come to this hospital. If he ever does, please tell him that there were two who loved him and never gave up on him."

The poor woman was getting steadily nearer to death. When the night had come the doctor came to check on her. "It will only be a matter of minutes," he said, "and she will be gone." The nurse then bent over the bed and asked her, "tell me the names of the two so that I can tell your son when I see him."

With lips trembling and eyes overflowing with tears, the woman answered, "tell him the two are God and his mother." With that she breathed her last.

What love this woman had for her son that she was willing to sacrifice all her worldly wealth and spend the last years of her life searching the country for him. Such "mother-love" must be among the deepest love in the world. It surely is a great love, sacrificing itself for another, but there is a love that surpasses even a mother's love; it is the love of God. No love can match the great love God has for wayward and rebellious sinners. In order to provide salvation for sinners such as you and I, God was willing to give His only Son to die a cruel death at Calvary. John 3:16 FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.
