Themes God's Mercy MERCY IN A MALL A few years ago, just before Christmas, I sat in a mall watching people as they passed by. There were all kinds. Fat ones. Skinny ones. Old and young ones. Happy ones. Worried ones. Angry ones. Rich ones. Poor ones. And a whole lot of others. Poking along the corridor came a boy of about 14. He was pushing a child in a wheel chair. Her body was pathetically deformed. Harried shoppers rushed past. Some glanced. Others looked back quickly after they passed. The boy paid no attention. He moved very slowly from window to window, leaning over the wheelchair talking quietly to the girl. He gently turned her head to help her see the dazzling displays and the twinkling lights. His face was close to hers as he pointed out the sights. Could she see them? I don't know. Her mouth was open. She slobbered. The boy reached in his pocket and brought out his handkerchief and tenderly wiped her face. He held her hand and moved on a little bit farther. There seemed to be almost no response. Tears welled up in my eyes at the kindness that young boy displayed. I went over and spoke to him, telling him how much his kindness and compassion had touched me. He was quiet. Maybe a bit shy. She is my sister," he told me. Just then, his mother came along. We spoke. She said, "I can't describe how awful we felt eight years ago when our daughter was born. So handicapped. We were devastated. We thought we could never experience a greater tragedy, or bear a greater burden. But, this has not been a tragedy. These circumstances have brought us to know the Lord. Our daughter has been a blessing to our whole family." "Yes," she said as she fondly looked from her son to her daughter, "Our burden has become our blessing!" We talked a little longer. Then, they slowly moved on. Anger. Self-pity. Grumbling. Bitterness. Hatred. The world is so full of it. But, as I watched them disappear down the mall, I saw a light shining in a dark world. Her last words, "...we should not trust in ourselves, but in God..." stuck in my mind. Those Words are in the Bible. Look those words up in the Bible in 2 Corinthians 1:9. We know God is love (1 John 4:8). But, God's love has many aspects. One of those is His mercy. The Lord Jesus showed God's mercy when He helped those who were miserable. One day, as He walked with His disciples, a leper in all his misery called out, "If you will, you can make me clean." The Bible says, Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth His hand, touched him, and said, "I will; be thou clean." Immediately, the Leprosy disappeared. The Bible is full of stories like that to remind us, "...that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy" (James 5:11). God shows His mercy to you everyday. Best of all, He wants to show you mercy and save your soul. He can because, "in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
