Themes: Protection in Christ

Lenny had been playing hockey from the time he was six years old. He played the game right through grade school years, high school, and was the goalie on a college team.

Although he no longer played hockey regularly, he was still very interested in it. So when the opportunity came along to help a boys' team of eight, nine, and ten-year-olds, he was glad to assist them.

During practice one day, Lenny stepped in to play Goalie while Chad was off with the flu. The team supply bag only produced a face mask that was too small for Lenny. He thought to himself, "I don't need one, They're just little boys!"

There are many people around us who are not properly protected. They go through each day not concerned about the danger they face. You may be asking, "What danger?" It is the danger that each person is in who has not accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his own Savior. When the Lord Jesus comes back (as he has promised he will), or if a person dies without having his sins washed away in the blood of the Lord Jesus (Revelation 1:5), he or she will face the punishment for his sins. But God has made complete protection from the coming judgment, by telling us that "Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God." (1 Peter 3:18). One who has trusted His word, and accepted Christ as his Savior has complete protection from the wrath of God against sin. Nothing can take away the eternal Salvation that only Christ can give.

Lenny put on the pads, gloves, chest protector, and picked up the goalie stick and skated in front of the net. The boys made a couple of passes and then it happened. A mighty slap shot from the right wing came in, and just feet in front of the goal, the puck glanced off another stick and struck Lenny directly in his left eye, breaking his contact lens.

In much pain, Lenny was driven straight to the hospital emergency room. There the doctor carefully removed broken pieces of plastic from Lenny's battered eye, For a week Lenny wore a patch over his eye to keep it closed. Upon reexamination the doctor had more bad news. He found that the blow to the eye had caused other damage. Lenny had to go back to the hospital for an operation the next morning. Then he had to stay in the hospital for a week with both eyes bandaged. He was not allowed to get out of bed or even move his head around, because any little bump would prevent his eye from healing.

For several weeks after he got out of the hospital, Lenny had to go to the doctor for a series of painful eye treatments. A few months later the doctor discovered that Lenny had developed an eye disease that may cause him to go blind. He now has to put medicine in his eyes every day for the rest of his life.

Do you think Lenny learned a lesson from his experience? He certainly did, but it is too late now to prevent the accident. He cannot undo the damage that was done. Lenny can tell you the value of a goalie's mask, yet there is nothing that is more valuable than your soul. Don't refuse God's word, and protection for your eternity. His great love to you has provided all that you need to be saved. It is our prayer that today you would accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior.

"The Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me." Galatians 2:20
