Themes: Time is Short D.O. Once while flying to Boston, I sat beside a pleasant businessman. We chatted. Often he looked at his watch and muttered. The longer we traveled, the more upset he became. Our flight was late. Near Boston, we started circling. Too many planes were arriving, so we had to wait our turn. He looked out the window. Then he checked his watch. He smacked his fist into his other hand. When the captain announced another delay, my friend buried his head in his hands. He talked through locked teeth. "Come on. I've got to get that flight." Arriving on time is very important to many people who fly. They have to catch another flight or attend a major meeting. In September 1987, the government decided to report "On Time Ratings" for all airlines. They were forcing airlines to be on time. This report says a plane is "on time" if it leaves or arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of its schedule. Delays due to mechanical problems don't affect the rating. During 1988, just about four out of every five flights were "on time." Some months in the next two years, airlines were "on time" almost 93 out of 100 times. Airline employees worked hard. The planes used advanced instruments. Computers planned the flights. But no one could control the weather. That caused most of the delays. Airlines have the finest equipment available. They make every effort to arrive at the scheduled time. At best, they arrive within 15 minutes of schedule only 93 times out of 100. Generally, they don't reach 80 times out of 100. That helps to emphasize how remarkable it is that God keeps His Word to the minute 100 times out of 100. Nothing gets out of His control. God said His people would return to their land after the 70 years of Babylon's rule. He kept His Word exactly to the year. God said His Son would come to the Jewish nation 483 years after a certain date (Daniel 9:26). He kept His Word to the very day (Luke 19:42)! Although He hasn't told us the day or hour when the Lord will return, He has planned the moment. Christ will come exactly on schedule. God's Word is 100% reliable. God says we must be saved (Acts 4:12) because we have sinned against Him. His Word can't be broken. Unless your sins are forgiven, you cannot be saved. He says that faith in Christ is the only means of salvation (Acts 16:31). Christ's death on the cross is God's only way to remove your sins. God promises that every soul who believes His Word about His Son is saved (1 John 5:13). The God Who always keeps His Word assures us. Every soul who trusts the Lord Jesus for salvation is eternally safe. God's Word is sure 100 times out of 100. You can depend on His Word. As important as your soul's salvation is, anything less than His Word is not reliable enough. You couldn't have anything better. O yes. You likely want to know about my friend on the airplane. He caught his next flight. It was late too.
