Themes: Christ's Authority to Forgive

TW

It was June 17, l972 in the early hours of the morning.
Private security guard, Frank Willis strolled through the halls of the Watergate office building in Washington D.C. Suddenly he noticed something strange on one of the doors. Stopping to take a closer look he discovered it was tape, taping the lock on the door open. Quickly he called the city police and within minutes they arrested 5 burglars inside the office building.

Police began to investigate the break-in of the Democratic headquarters. Some of the facts were startling. Soon other groups began to investigate as well. News reporters, the justice Department, and even the U. S. Senate began to search for the answers. Early evidence revealed that the 5 "burglars" worked for men connected to the" Re-Elect the President" Committee. As well, it became clear that they were not out to take money but rather to place electronic spying devices in the building. This proved even more interesting since it was election year and every little bit of information could help one candidate win.

Soon the trial of these men began. More important than just proving these men broke into the building was at stake. Why did they break into the building with spying devices and who were they working for? Further investigations took place. Many important people in the government resigned from their jobs because they were found guilty of doing wrong. The prosecutor continued his investigation until he had evidence that even the President of the United States was involved with this "break in" and tried to cover it up! Immediately the President resigned from his office.

Some wanted to see him convicted like the rest, many others thought he had been embarrassed enough. The Prosecutor wanted to bring Mr. Nixon to court. He felt there was evidence to prove him guilty. Mr. Nixon could not stop the prosecutor from doing this. The Congress could not help nor could his friends. There was only one man who had the authority and the power to keep Mr. Nixon from going to court, that was the new President of the United States. On Sunday, September 8, 1974, President Ford granted Mr. Nixon a full, free and absolute pardon.

Once again we see how only one man had both the power and authority to meet the need. The Lord jesus is the only one that can meet the need of girls and boys today. He once said "that ye may know that the son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins."

Peter preached to an audience of men and told them that "neither is there salvation in other other. For there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved." Acts 4:12.

The Lord Jesus is not only able to save, but He is the ONLY savior.
