Themes: "Way that seems right, Sin's Deception DP It was a cold, wet day in mid-December at the local airport. In fact, hardly any planes were flying due to the bad weather. Only an occasional U.S. Air commuter flight would land and taxi up to the terminal to let off passengers. The ground crew had little to do since nobody was flying. They spent the morning cleaning and fueling the trucks and tugs they used to tow the parked aircraft. Todd was line crew chief and shivered in the raw air as he walked toward the maintenance hangar to check on the status of planes in the shop. As he drew closer to the hangar doors, he heard an aircraft engine drone in the murky sky overhead. "Dumb," he muttered. "Only a nut would fly on a day like this!" Quickly, he glanced up over the main terminal roof as he heard the plane coming closer. The cloud cover above the airport was very low, only about 250 feet off the runway surface. He was still searching the sky when the twin engine Cessna 401 suddenly plunged out of the mist just beyond the main terminal roof and well down the runway. "He's far too high to land that thing in time!" Todd thought as he watched the plane sink lower, streak by the runway intersection and then zoom out of sight behind some pine trees. The air was quiet again. Todd shrugged uncertainly as he continued towards the hangar door. Forty-five seconds later, a blaring wail sounded across the airport. The emergency fire horn was sounding from the airport fire station. Todd burst through the hangar door to tell the chief mechanic what he had just seen. As mechanics and airport personnel raced out to the end of the runway, they could see the grooves in the grass. There was a huge hole in the boundary fence. Across the road lay the Cessna 401 plane with its nose crumpled into the earth embankment. Smoke and small flames were licking the shredded right wing tip. As they ran towards the plane, a figure staggered across the road towards them. He had a gash on the bridge of his nose, and blood trickled from the cut. The pilot was hurt, but alive! As he turned and looked at the crumpled mess he began to shake. Fortunately, he was the only one aboard and he was all right. What had happened? He had "missed the mark." He had come out of the clouds too late and discovered he was too high. He decided to try to land anyway. What a costly mistake! You may be making the same foolish mistake with your life. You may think everything is all right and you hope you will land safely in Heaven. However, you may learn too late that you have missed the mark. The Bible says there is only one way of salvation. Jesus said, "I am THE WAY, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me" (John 14:6). Are you depending on the only way or are you going to miss the mark - forever!
