ROT AND RATS

When World War 1 broke out, Australia was a Commonwealth belonging to Great Britain. Upon hearing of the war, the Premier of Australia offered to do whatever Great Britain asked in order to help.

The reply from Great Britain came back promptly and urgently. The British thanked the Australians and asked them to please build ships. They were in dire need of ships to transport troops and supplies, and they were losing some of the ones they had to Germany's new weapon, the U-Boat (or submarine).

The Australians read the urgent request for ships. They met to discuss it and decided that, since they weren't all that experienced at making ships, they would send food supplies instead. They planted tons of grain to send to Great Britain. All the Australian farmers, anxious to do their part for the war, dedicated sections of their fields for the grain. At harvest time, with the war raging in Europe, the Australians brought the grain to the harbors in bags. There was tons and tons of it, and the Australians felt very proud. They sent word to Britain that the grain was ready to be picked up.

Days passed, and there was no sign of any British ships. The Australians sent repeated messages to the British, but the reply came back that there were absolutely no ships available to pick up the food. Every last one was employed in carrying troops and supplies in and around Europe.

The grain that had been so readily provided sat in the harbor and rotted. As it rotted, mice and rats began to infest it. Disease spread quickly; the Australians had never seen anything like it. Many died as a result of the disease. This all happened because the Australians disobeyed Great Britain's order for ships. They thought that their way would be just as helpful, but they ended up hurting themselves and certainly not helping the British!

Isn't this just like people today who think they can improve on what God asks them to do? The Bible says, "we have turned everyone to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). People use what they think is an easier way to be saved, like prayers, or good works. They don't think that they are disobeying, to because by anyone's standards they are doing good. However, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12).

God's Son has finished the work and all He asks is for you accept Him. When the Lord Jesus announced, "It is finished" (John 19:30), He meant that the entire work needed to take you to Heaven was done. He paid for it with His life. You can do nothing else but accept it for your salvation. Have you?
