Themes Danger Ahead SAVED BY LIGHTNING "Kidnapped", the exciting novel by Robert Louis Stevenson is a tale of a young man, David Balfour. Both of David's parents died and he was all alone. A friend told him about a town far away where David had some relatives. David was surprised! He didn't think he had any relatives that were living. So, he set off for the town. He found only one relative, a creepy old uncle whose name was Ebenezer. Uncle Ebenezer did not seem to trust David and acted like he wanted David to go away. He acted this way because he had a lot of money that had belonged to David's father who was now dead. The money really belonged to David. Uncle Ebenezer wanted David to go away so he would not have to give David his inheritance. David was not afraid of his uncle, he just thought he was strange. David continued to stay at the house. Finally Uncle Ebenezer planned a way to have David killed and to make it look like an accident. He told David to go up to the tower on top of the house. To get there, he had to go up some stairs that ran along the outside of the house. David started up on a very dark stormy night. He could not see anything. Just after he had taken a few steps, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky. For just a second, David could see the stairs he was walking on. To his horror, he could see the stairs above him were gradually getting smaller. Eventually, they ended. If he had continued climbing, he would have walked right out into the air and fallen to his death many feet below. David was frightened and angry when he realized his uncle had tried to kill him. How thankful David was for the lightning that had shown him what was ahead. We are all born traveling on a more dark and dangerous path than the one David was on. The Lord Jesus called this path the "broad road that leads to destruction (Hell)" (Matthew 7:13). We all start out on that road because we are all sinners. We would never know we were on such a road. However, the Bible says, "Thy (God's) Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). The Bible not only shows us where we are headed but also how we can get on to a road that leads to everlasting life. God "will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth" (1 Timothy 2:4). God has provided His Word to show us the truth. He has provided His Son to save us and give us everlasting life. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). David would have been foolish to continue walking up the stairs. Yet many people ignore the light of God's word and continue on the broad road that leads to destruction. What about you, what will you do with the light God has given you?
