Themes Able to Save SAVED FROM THE FIRE! It was a beautiful Fall morning in California. Cynthia Salisbury strolled across her green lawn. She looked out on the blue of the Pacific Ocean. Then she stopped. Why was it so quiet? Why weren't the birds singing? A strong, hot breeze met her face. Fire! Brush fires had begun miles away yesterday. Surely they would not come this far? But they had. Later that day, Cynthia and her son, Teddy watched the helicopters whirl above them. "Will the fire hurt our dogs?" Teddy asked. "No, it will be okay," Cynthia patted his back. But she wasn't sure. Already the sky was dark with ash from the fire. Then the TV screen went blank and the house went dark. "Mom!" Cynthia's older daughter, Elizabeth came running. "The fire is across the street! We have to get out of here!" Cynthia ran outside, pulling Teddy by the hand. "Hurry!" she shouted as she shut the car door. Suddenly, ahead, Cynthia saw cars stopped. She slammed on her brakes. "we're trapped! The fire is blocking the road! We can't get out!" a neighbor shouted. Cynthia took a deep breath and got out of the car. She looked toward the Pacific ocean again. Just a 200 foot climb down to the water, and they could be safe. Elizabeth looked at her mother, and said, "I think we can make it." But could Teddy? Behind them a house burst into flames. Cynthia grabbed Teddy's hand. "Let's go!" she shouted into the wind. The smoke was thick as they began to slide down the hill on their backs. Cynthia gasped as she lost her balance. Hands flailing, she caught a vine. Looking down, she shut her eyes. Below was a 150 foot drop to the ocean. The fire was behind her. She was trapped. "Teddy!" Cynthia screamed. Below she saw a rescue crew climbing the hill. The 70 foot flames dropped embers all around her. There was no answer from Teddy. Suddenly one of the rescue workers burst through the brush. "My son!" she cried. "He's back there. Please find him!!" By now the fire was only yards away. The fireman turned and ran into the flames. Seconds later, he came out clutching Teddy. "Go, Go!" the fireman shouted. Cynthia and Teddy climbed down the rescue rope to safety. As they reached the bottom of the hill, the whole cliff exploded in flames. Cynthia turned to the fireman and sobbed, "You saved my son's life! You were his only hope, and you saved him. You could have died, but you saved my son!" Just like that fireman was Teddy's only hope of safety, the Lord Jesus is our only hope, too. We deserve the fires of Hell for our sins, but there is one way of salvation. The Lord Jesus is THE way of salvation because "Christ died for our sins" (1 Corinthians 15:3). The Bible says, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). Is the Lord Jesus YOUR Savior? Has He saved YOU?
