Spying on the Enemy Print E-mail
Themes: Satan, the enemy of souls

In every war, there are people who act as spies. Their job is to get into the army or country of the enemy and to find out what they are doing. The reason for this, is that the better you know your enemy, the greater chance you have of winning the battle.

The great Civil War in America produced many spies. Emma Edmonds was a young Canadian nurse. She could ride a horse and shoot a gun better than most men. She even shot game to feed her patients. But she was best at spying.

Early in 1862 fighting was going on near Yorktown Virginia. She dressed up and impersonated a black man. She made her way into the Confederate army and for several days moved among the soldiers. They thought that it was just a slave who was there working for the army. She found out information about the army and got that information back to the Northern Army.

She did something even braver. She disguised herself as a soldier, "Frank Thompson", and actually became an orderly to General Kerny during a battle known as the Seven Days battle. Working in the General's tent, she was able to find out valuable information which helped the North defeat the enemy.

She risked her life as a spy to gain this information. She knew that the battle was important. Lives depended on her spying and finding out about the enemy. She did her job well.

The Bible tells us that there is an enemy on the track of every boy and girl. The Bible doesn't tell us a lot about Satan, (in fact the story of Job is only the second time his name in mentioned in the Bible), but it does tell us enough to warn us. The most dangerous thing about Satan is that he poses as your friend. Yet his greatest desire is to keep you from knowing Christ and bringing pleasure to God. One of his strategies is to "blind the minds" (2Cor.4:4) of men and women. He amuses them with other things so that they will not think about eternity.

Another thing which he does is to keep the Word of God from us (Matthew 13). He knows that if men hear enough of the Bible that they will be saved. He has constructed a world which fills the minds of everyone with so many other things that they do not have time for the Bible; or if they do hear it, they quickly forget it because of so many other things.

God has given you a look at your enemy. Will you allow him to keep you from Christ and salvation?
