Themes Life and Death Choices THE BIG DECISION! In the middle of the night, Cheryl elbowed her husband, Michael to wake him up. She had a terrible headache, felt sick to her stomach and had was having difficulty speaking. She got out of bed, but felt dizzy. Michael and Cheryl knew something was wrong. They rushed to a hospital only to receive bad news. The doctors examined Cheryl very carefully. One of the blood vessels carrying blood from Cheryl's heart to her brain was blowing up like a balloon. If it popped, Cheryl might die. The doctor explained that only serious surgery could fix Cheryl's blood vessel. However, even surgery was not a guarantee that she would live. It was risky. Cheryl was pregnant with a baby boy. The doctors told Cheryl and Michael Cheryl might die if she did not have surgery. However, the surgery would likely make the baby die. Every minute that slipped past, Cheryl's life was in danger. But, how could they make a decision? It seemed they had to choose Cheryl's life or the baby's. It was that a simple but awful choice. They chose surgery hoping the child would live. The next morning, Cheryl was whisked to the operating room. The surgery was delicate and complicated. Michael waited outside wondering if they had made the right decision. As they operated, the doctors slowed Cheryl's heart down until it completely stopped beating. A machine pumped her blood through her body. At the same time, doctors cooled her body to a dangerously low temperature. The surgeon spent an incredibly long twenty minutes fixing the blood vessel. His hand was as steady as a man walking a tight rope. One slip would have major consequences. Nine hours later, the surgery was finished. But, the question still hung heavily. Was surgery the right decision? Answers came as Cheryl recovered and soon a healthy baby was born. The surgery was more than a success! Cheryl and her baby were both alive and healthy. It was a life or death decision; surgery was the right decision after all. The Bible tells us of a life or death decision we all must face. Accepting or not accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior is the difference between eternal life and eternal death. He is the only one that can save us because, "Christ died for our sins according to the Scripture" (1 Corinthians 15:3). Everyone must make this great decision about the Lord Jesus. The Bible says, "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on Him" (John 3:36). Having salvation is the most important thing in life no matter what it may cost you. Don't let anything keep you from being saved. As the Lord Jesus said, "Strive to enter in" (Luke 13:24)!
