THE FAKE FALL THAT FAILED

The crowd screamed as the big show began. "Welcome to Sunday Night Heat!" yelled commentator Jim Ross into the microphone.

Fourteen thousand people had gathered in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on May 23, 1999 to witness a two part World Wrestling Federation show. For several hours, muscle laden hulks, tossed each other around the ring banging heads, flipping each other to the mats, and punching each other. With each staged fight the roar of the crowd grew.

The second half of the show was called "Over the Edge". The script in the pre-planned show called for a wrestler to swing down from the ceiling attached to a cable. Owen Hart, age 33, climbed his way to the roof and waited. The 5-foot-10, 227 pound muscleman was nicknamed the "Blue Blazer." His father, Stu Hart had been a professional wrestler as well as his six brothers. One of his brothers, Bret "The Hitman" Hart was a World Championship Wrestler.

The crowd cheered as video clips of Owen Hart were displayed on a big screen. At the right moment, the Blue Blazer leapt from his perch 50 feet up. He had practiced it before with the cable snugly attached. But this time, his head hit a turnbuckle and his body tumbled like a doll onto the mat in the ring.

At first the crowd screamed with delight at what they thought was a stunt. Commentator Jim Ross went silent. and then repeated over and over that Hart's fall was not part of the script Paramedics rushed in to attend to Hart before rushing him away in an ambulance. After 15 minutes, the show went on.

Owen "The Blue Blazer" Hart died from his fall. The cable he thought would hold him tight and give him a safe landing did not.

The lesson? What a tragedy when someone thinks they will be safe and they are not. The Bible warns of many people who think they are Christians but will never arrive safely in Heaven. Some are trusting in their church, their baptism, their prayers, or even their believing. Many people have gone to the front, raised their hand at a service, or prayed a prayer.

Remember, the Bible says, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). You can have religion or even "believing" and not have Christ. Are you saved? Are you sure? Don't make a mistake that would be far worse than Owen Hart's. Don't be like those the Bible says "will seek to enter in, and shall not be able" (Luke 13:24).

You can be sure because, "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God" (1 John 5:13). Are you?
