Themes Bible Accuracey THE IMPOSSIBLE PROMISE Can you say this number? 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 What are the chances that eight promises about the Lord Jesus in the Old Testament would come true? Some historians say the chances are one out of 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. In other words, almost impossible. However, Jesus said, "ALL THINGS MUST BE FULFILLED, which were written... concerning me" (Luke 24:44). "All things" means more than eight. It means the more than 300 promises in the Old Testament about the Lord Jesus must come true. Zechariah lived 500 years before Jesus. One day, he wrote about the day when Jesus would come to be King of Israel. He promised He would ride into the city on a small donkey rather than a big white stallion like most kings. Daniel lived 600 years before Jesus. He worked as a special advisor to the king. One day, God had Daniel write down a prophecy. He wrote that one day a king was going to give an order that would allow the Jewish people to rebuild the city of Jerusalem. The Lord Jesus would ride into Jerusalem 483 years later. Nehemiah lived 500 years before Jesus. He obtained a permit from King Artaxerses to go and rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. The clock started ticking. Over four hundred years passed. Most Jewish people forgot about God. Many worshipped idols. But, the clock was ticking. Four hundred and fifty years later, a Jewish couple, who loved God, traveled to Bethlehem. Mary gave birth to Jesus in the exact village God had promised - Bethlehem. The clock was still ticking. When Jesus was 30 years old, He left home and traveled through the countryside. He helped poor people, healed sick people, fed hungry people and even raised dead people. He assured people every thing God had promised about Him in the Old Testament would come true. And the clock went on ticking. Then at Jesus request, Peter and John found a donkey tied up just where Jesus said they would. They brought the stubborn, untrained beast to the Lord. As Jesus rode the donkey, people poured into the street. They had heard of His miracles. Wouldn't it be great to have a "healer" for a King? To honor Him, they clipped off Palm Branches and laid them on the ground as He rode, not on a white stallion, but an untrained donkey. When He entered Jerusalem, the Jewish calendar read "Nissan 10, AD 33." And the clock stopped! Four hundred and eighty-three years to the day, the Lord Jesus came to Jerusalem as the King. The chances of this happening were impossible. However, He is God and He made sure it happened. "Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3). You can trust God's word because, "God cannot lie" (Titus 1:2). If He promised that YOU have everlasting life and would be in Heaven, could YOU trust Him? Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life" (John 5:24).
