They came to see if the man on Hill Street was as nasty as all the kids said he was. Some of the stories about Mr. Kronner sounded like lies. Today they came to find out. "He's coming this way," whispered Dennis, "What's going to happen if he sees us? I'm scared." Ted motioned for Dennis to be quiet. Suddenly the man's three dogs started barking. They were tied up with chains and looked as cross as their master. Mr. Kronner turned toward them and hollered for them to shut up. The dogs would not stop barking. He man picked up a long stick and threw it at the dogs and yelled at them again. Strange language came out of Mr. Kronner's mouth. Ted and Dennis plugged their ears. The man went over and grabbed one of the chains and gave it a good yank. The dog yelped in pain and then cowered. The boys didn't want to stay any longer. When Mr. Kronner turned his back they crab walked as fast as they could along the hedge until they were behind the garage next door. Then they broke into a run. "That's enough of that," panted Dennis as they reached Ted's house. A few months later the boys were going door to door selling candy for the marching band. They were busy talking about their woodworking project at school and didn't notice that they were on Hill Street. They didn't realize where they were when they walked up to the Mr. Kronner's front door. When the man came to the door the boys recognized him. Their sales pitch froze in their mouths. They stood like statues. "Well, what are we selling today boys?" asked Mr. Kronner as he looked at the order form in Ted's hand. He wasn't gruff. He didn't even yell. The boys didn't breathe; neither did they answer. "Let's try this again," said the man gently "You are selling something aren't you?" He even smiled at them. Ted finally mumbled that they were selling chocolate bars for the school band. The man gave them a big order. He invited them to come back some time. Ted and Dennis walked away confused. That evening, Ted's mother told them what happened. A Christian man from across the street did everything possible to be kind to Mr. Kronner. This kindness surprised him.. After a few weeks the men started to meet every afternoon and became friends. It wasn't long until they started reading the Bible together. From the Bible he learned that Jesus died for sinners. He became convicted of his sin and soon believed that Jesus died for him. He was saved. He now has the Spirit of God living inside him and enjoys doing the things that please God. "There is no doubt in my mind that he has changed," said Dennis. Ted nodded in agreement.
