Themes Thankfulness THE POST OFFICE Traffic! My fingers drummed the steering wheel. My mood was of numbed impatience. I stomped on the accelerator and screeched into the parking slot. Once I turned off the ignition I had no desire to get out of the car. Just a few minutes before, I had awakened from a long afternoon nap. However, I was still tired. Was I sick? No. Just depressed. The post office box yielded only junk mail and bills. One letter belonged to someone else, so I went to the main counter in the next room. No lines. I was alone. While waiting for the absent mail clerk, the door opened. Someone came and stood behind me. "Good afternoon! Isn't it a beautiful glorious day today? My, but it is wonderful!" A cheerful, yet fragile voice, rejoiced. I was not in the mood to rejoice with anyone, but I turned to say good morning. The words froze in my mouth. Standing before me was a young man, tall and thin. His scarred right hand gripped a cane. The hand trembled. His right leg was in a brace. Tucked under his limp left arm was a small package. When my eyes reached his face, my heart sank. He stared at me as if not seeing. His eyes were watery, very delicate. Scars and blemishes covered his face. A cervical collar supported his neck. His crooked smile showed missing teeth. When I looked down again, I noticed the cane was white. Shivers shrieked down my spine. Feelings of pity for my sadness immediately disappeared. I found my voice and made it as cheerful as possible. "Good afternoon sir. Yes, a beautiful afternoon indeed!" Tears blurred my vision while I drove home. The encounter with the man in the post office jerked me into reality. This battered man had every right to pity himself, and yet he was glorying in the fact that he was alive. He looked like a fragment of war - beaten and shattered. A broken body, but a very thankful spirit. For him to be alive and able to walk, was a miracle - like a resurrection from the dead. Many years have passed since that day, but I still think of this young man. Where is he now? Is he still alive, or is his body awaiting eternal resurrection? And which resurrection will it be? To life eternal? Or to the Lake of Fire? What about you? "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth" (John 5:28-29). "...that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just (saved) and unjust (unsaved)" (Acts 24:15). The Lord Jesus gave His life and died on the Cross. Because the Lord Jesus rose again from the dead we can have the promise of eternal life. Don't miss out on the resurrection of the just (saved). Trust Christ as your Savior, NOW!
