The Prince's Ring Print E-mail

Faster! He had to run faster! He could hear the pounding footsteps of the others that chased him in the darkness. Michael frantically searched for a place to hide. He darted into a barn and quickly hid in the hay loft. As Michael heard the other boys enter the barn he sat very still and held his breath. He wondered to himself: "How did I get into such a mess?"

It was only a week ago that Michael was safe behind the walls of his father's castle. His father was a king, which meant Michael was a prince. He had servants, horses and lots of toys but he had one problem: he was lonely. Prince Michael was an only child and he didn't have any friends to play with. His father tried to cheer him up by giving him things but nothing worked. Finally, Michael decided he wanted to be like the other boys, if only for a little while.

A farmer brought vegetables to the castle once a week. Michael decided that when no one was looking he would climb into the farmer's wagon. So that's exactly what he did. Before long the farmer returned to the village where he lived. Prince Michael waited until dark and then crawled out of the wagon. He found some old work clothes hanging on a peg near the farmer's barn. He changed out of the clothes of a prince into the clothes of a common worker. The only things that Michael didn't take off were the signet ring that his father had given to him and his shoes. The ring would identify Michael as a prince if he ever got into trouble.

For a few days everything went great. He met some boys in the village and played games with them every afternoon. Prince Michael missed his parents and he knew that they must be worried about him, but he was having so much fun. One night when Prince Michael was warming himself by a fire in the village, he heard a voice behind him:"Hey! Those are my clothes that were stolen!" Michael spun around. It was the farmer! Prince Michael didn't know what to do so he ran. The farmer and his sons chased Michael and trapped him in a barn.

The farmer went and got the sheriff and they entered the barn together. "Come down from there boy!", said the sheriff. Michael climbed down slowly. "Explain yourself!", shouted the farmer. Prince Michael said nothing. He simply raised his hand and showed everyone his signet ring. They were all amazed that this was the prince in disguise. He returned home to the safety and loneliness of the castle.

People wonder why Jesus had to perform miracles. When Jesus did miraculous things like heal sick people or change water into wine he was proving that He was the Son of God.

Prince Michael had only a ring to prove that he was the king's son. Jesus Christ had more than miracles, He had the very words of the God of heaven: " This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." Matthew 3:17
