The Right Stuff

If there was ever a man who had the "right stuff" for greatness, this was the man. He was brilliant. He could win his point in a debate. His family background was outstanding. The greatest preacher in New England in Colonial times, Jonathan Edwards, was one of his ancestors. There was no telling how far he would go in America. The only problem was that he was very proud.

His name was Aaron Burr and he did go far. In fact, in 1800, he tied with Thomas Jefferson in the election for President of the United States. Only after 36 ballots was the tie broken. Jefferson became President and Burr became Vice President.

But Burr felt that he had been insulted by Alexander Hamilton . On July 11, 1804, Aaron Burr stood on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River in Weehawken, NJ. He faced Alexander Hamilton in a duel. As shots rang out, Hamilton slumped to the ground. He was badly wounded and soon died. The country was outraged and Burr actually had to leave the Capital and hide for a while. Later, he quietly returned to Washington and tried to function as Vice President.

In March 1805, he made a farewell speech to the Senate. Burr was known as a very proud man. He thought that he could do anything and could beat anyone.

When he left Washington, he was still angry that he had never been president. He actually plotted treason. Burr found a man who would help him. They went to the western part of the United States and tried to organize an army which would take over the west so that he could become its emperor. But the plan was discovered and Burr had to escape. He tried to get both England and France to support his cause. Both refused.

In 1812 he returned to New York. He never again rose to fame. In 1836, he died at the age of 80. History says that when he was told that he was dying, he said, "I can"t die". He never lost his pride. He still thought that he could beat death. His doctor replied, "Mr. Burr, you are already dying."

Aaron Burr had many good qualities which helped him to rise in the political world. He was made of most of the right stuff. But he never achieved what he could have. His pride, his sin, stood in the way. Samson in our story never became what God intended him to be. His sin got in the way.

God has a great plan and purpose for all men and women. It is not just to be in heaven at the end of life, but it is to enjoy his fellowship and love during life. Sadly, most people never believe it. They are blinded by the God of this age (2Cor.4:4) and never see what God has for them.

All of us have a fatal flaw, a big mistake and problem in us. It is our sin. "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God". Rom.3:23. Only by having sins forgiven can we be what God wants us to be. Sin can only be forgiven by God. Yet He has given His Son for us. "In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of Sins." Eph.1:7.
