THE SAFE SIDE

For many families, the pounding on the door came while they slept. It was the police! They were demanding and rude. "You must leave this building now!" they said, "It is going to be torn down. The year was 1961. The place was Germany. Dozens of families were losing their homes. Many had to leave their possessions behind and watch as their houses were leveled.

The Communist government was clearing a path for what came to be known as the Berlin Wall. The wall was built with cement and barbed wire It was too high to climb, and guarded by soldiers. Inside was East Berlin. Thousands of people were trapped in this huge prison.

On the East side of the wall, there was fear and desperation. On the other side of the wall there was safety, freedom, and peace. The Communist Government inside was evil. May people were not content to stay as prisoners. They made plans to escape to the other side.

Tunneling through the ground was extremely difficult. However, one 81 year old man did it! He and 11 others about his age made it to safety under the wall. On another occasion, 57 people escaped through a different tunnel. They secretly dug the passage which was only wide enough to pass in one direction. Inch by inch, they crawled to freedom just hours before the police discovered their escape route. If they had been caught, they would have been put to death immediately.

A farmer, who often traveled to area fairs, built a huge model cow exhibit. Border guards allowed it to pass through the gate in the wall several times. They never knew that hidden in the "cow's" belly were members of this man's family!

Many people made other daring escapes. One family left at night in a hot air balloon. Another man crashed the border crossing in a speeding train. While some escaped safely, over 50 others died trying. Many were shot by guards.

These stories of the Berlin Wall remind me of another wall, the outside wall of each Israelite's house. One night this wall was stained with blood from the Passover lamb. For the oldest child in the home it meant that there was "safety" on the other side.

Have you ever come to understand that God promises eternal safety for you? The Lord Jesus is the only Savior. He provided salvation by dying on the cross at Calvary. He wants you to accept that you are a sinner who deserves punishment from God for your sins. He also wants you to come to Him for salvation. Trust the Lord Jesus today as your personal place of safety. "Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28).
