He entertained bankers, publishers, union presidents and other important people aboard his 180 foot yacht, Lady Gishlaine. He knew what it was to have lunch at the White House with the President.

Every where he went, people applauded him and called him the financial savior. He was supposed to be one of the wealthiest men alive.

Yet on Oct.31, 1991 he boarded his yacht. This time there were no visiting dignitaries. He was alone. The crew was told to aimlessly sail around in the Atlantic. On the fifth night at sea, Robert Maxwell disappeared.

What happened? How could it have happened? Why did it happen?

It turned out that the financial genius, the triumphant investor who had saved the New York Daily News and had built a vast empire in global communications, was really a fake. He was a liar and cheat.

Robert Maxwell, a 310 pound Czechoslovakian born British subject had been stealing money from pension funds which he controlled and was deeply in debt. He kept buying companies and spending money which he really did not have. Because so many people believed that he was rich, they loaned him whatever he needed. Everyone thought he was wealthy because he acted wealthy.

But the truth began to slowly surface. On that fateful October day when he stepped into his yacht, he knew that soon the whole truth would be known. He knew also that if he returned to Britain, he would be shamed and probably imprisoned. He had only two choices: to go back to Britain and face the charges, confess his guilt and accept his punishment, or ...

He could not face the truth. On the fifth evening out at sea, Robert Maxwell simply stepped off his yacht into the chilly waters of the Atlantic. He preferred death to facing the truth.

When some people are confronted with the truth, they choose to run from it. The Bible tells us that we are all sinners(Rom.3:23). Some people don't like that. They make believe that the Bible doesn't say that. The Bible tells us that we cannot get to heaven by our own works (Eph.2:8,9). Some pretend that they can.

There are many people who say that they are Christians but have never been saved. The only thing which really matters is whether you are real or not.
