Themes "Finished Work of Christ, Salvation is a Gift "TRUST ME!" "I don't believe it." an older man grumbled as he looked at the notice. "Me neither. There has got to be a catch somewhere." agreed his wife. As people walked through the streets of Dublin, Ireland, they stopped, read the notices, and then trudged on mumbling under their breath. Only five days earlier, a messenger boy had gone through the district and posted the notices. The message was from Lord Congleton. He owned a large number of houses in the area. Every month, all his renters had to send their rent payments to him. Everyone knew Lord Congleton was a Christian. When people lost their jobs they soon ran out of money. When the end of the month came, they could not pay their rent. Lord Congleton did not make them move out. Instead, he kept track of what they owed. Each month the debt grew. Soon many owed big amounts of rent. They knew Lord Congleton was very kind. But, how long would he let them go until their debts had to be paid? At any moment, he could come and make them pay or take them to jail. The messenger boy tacked up the posters all through the area. The placards said that if his tenants came to his office on a certain day before 12 noon, he would forgive their debt. For days, people talked about it. "Why would he do this? It can't be true." "Maybe it's a trap" Finally, the day came. People gathered outside Lord Congleton's house. They talked and whispered back and forth. No one wanted to be the first to test his words. Finally, just before noon, a man broke through the crowd and raced to the porch. He flung open the door and stepped inside holding his rent paper in his hand. "Do you really expect to be forgiven?" Lord Congleton asked the young man. "Yes, sir. You promised it." "And do you believe me?" "Yes I do." "But are you a good hard working man?" "The notice you posted did not say anything about that." "So, you just believe what I said and have come for a receipt." "Please, sir!" Lord Congleton wrote "PAID IN FULL" on his bill and handed it back to him. Just then, the clock struck twelve. The man swung open the door, and clambered down the steps yelling, "I've got it!" The crowd stormed towards the door. When they grabbed the handle, it was locked. Time was up! They missed out on having their debts forgiven because they would not believe the message he had sent. Worse than that, you could miss out on having your sins forgiven by God. He has a message for you in the Bible. He says you must come to Him for salvation. He can forgive your sins because the Lord jesus suffered and made payment for sins on the cross. The message from God to you today is that "Through this man (Jesus) is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins" (Acts 13:38).
