Wrong Way Corrigan Print E-mail
Themes: Only one way is right

It was July 1938 and Douglas Corrigan asked permission to fly across the Atlantic. The permission was not granted. The trip was not allowed by the officials. Douglas Corrigan had only an old single engine plane that the officials felt was not safe for the trip. Corrigan was disappointed and said that he would just fly home to California.

He took off from the east coast and began his journey home. When he finally broke through the clouds on July 18th, it wasn't California beneath him. He was landing in Ireland. He had told officials that he was heading west for California. But he had gone the exact opposite direction. He had gone east across the Atlantic to Ireland.

How did it happen? Corrigan claimed that his compass was stuck and he must have gotten mixed up in the clouds. Some people didn't believe him. He became known for the rest of his life as "Wrong Way Corrigan".

Is it possible for a man to go the very opposite direction that he wants to travel? Could he really have meant to go west but have gone east by mistake? We may never know the real truth about "Wrong Way Corrigan". But we do know that it is possible for people to think that they are traveling to heaven and really be on the road which leads to hell.

The Lord Jesus warned us about "the many" or the majority of people who are traveling on the broad road which leads to destruction. One of the saddest things is that amongst those on this road are some who think that they are serving the Lord. They actually tell the Lord that in His Name they have done many wonderful works. But the Lord Jesus will tell them that He does not know them. They are not His. They have never been saved and placed on the right road. (Matt.7:13-23).

Douglas Corrigan said that his compass was stuck and was not giving him the right direction. The Bible, the Word of God, is similar to a compass. It will guide us if we allow it. The Bible says that it is possible to be sincere yet not born again. Nicodemus was just such a person.

Are you trying to get to heaven but in the wrong way? There is only one way to be saved: "By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast." Eph.2:8,9.
