Lesson: 227 Lesson Name: Balaam: The Man who was Dumber than His Donkey
Theme: Sin Found Out / Detected Reading: Numbers 22:1-35 Memory Verse: II Pet. 2:16
Memory Verse Text: Balaam. . . Was rebuked for his iniquity. Point 1: The King of Moab sent important men to Balaam with the purpose of getting him to do something that was wrong and sinful. The distance that the men may have gone was very great; it could have been up to 400 miles! Application: There are many people and influences in the world today that seek the same thing; to encourage others to do sinful things.
Point 2: Balaam not only entertained the men sent from Moab, but he also allowed himself to entertain the thoughts they suggested. This was/is a very dangerous combination. Application: Be very careful about who you allow to be close to you.
Point 3: God spoke plainly to Balaam and told him that he couldn't go. (Suggest ways to the class that Balaam may have conveyed that message to the princes.) As a result, the men returned to the King who immediately sent them back to Balaam with a greater offer.
Point 4: Urged by the princes, Balaam was driven to Moab by his own lust and what God called "madness" in 2 Peter 2:16. On the journey to Moab, it became apparent that the donkey could see better than Balaam. Application: We should be thankful to God for others in our lives that He may use to awaken us. Notes: Perhaps it could be noted that the world says, "Every man has his price." Believers have a price as well, but their price has already been paid at the Cross and as a result, they are not their own. Summary: What would have happened if Balaam had continued on in the way he was going?
